Step inside this Californian bungalow with a built-in art studio
Colour, texture and whimsy are woven into this Californian bungalow. Home to Ebony and Sean Russell and their two children, the spaces are eclectic and thoughtful, with a mix of materials and new and vintage pieces. Ebony, a ceramicist, has layered art throughout, including some of her own beautiful pieces. Having a studio at home has been a game-changer for Ebony. “It’s a privilege to get to have a studio at home that isn’t a bench in the laundry,” she says.

This Sydney Federation home proves classic design never goes out of style
Contemporary elements, thoughtful details and heritage charm have been woven through the interiors of this four-bedroom house in South-Western Sydney. The brief to interior designers Leah and Fliss Pitman of Bone Made was for a Federation-inspired country style home with a casual feel, to accommodate a family of six. “They wanted it to be very layered and elegant, but with a sense of comfort,” says Leah. “They didn’t want it to be too opulent and over the top.

A Light-Filled Sydney Renovation Shaped By Intuition And Family
In the living areas of this light-filled family home, glass doors slide back to open to the timber deck and large pool beyond, creating an easy flow from inside to out. It’s where interior designer Pip Ganderton of PG Interior Studio, husband John and their three children spend most of their time – in the kitchen-living-dining area, plus the deck and garden beyond – and where they often host family and friends.
Colour and character bring an artist's Inner West California bungalow to life
Colour, texture and whimsy are woven into this California bungalow in Sydney’s Inner West. Home to Ebony and Sean Russell and their two children, the spaces are eclectic and thoughtful, with a mix of materials and new and vintage pieces. Ebony, a ceramicist, has layered art throughout, including some of her own beautiful pieces. The family bought the house in 2019, with the intention to renovate. “It was definitely a fixer-upper,” says Ebony.
Visit a heavenly French-inspired midcentury home full of light and hope
Moving out of the city was a leap of faith for photographer and designer Amelia Soegijono and her husband, Lex Florian Chan, an architectural consultant. The couple, who had previously lived in Sydney’s inner suburb of Surry Hills, loved the hustle and bustle of city life, but the lure of somewhere new with more space for their family beckoned. It took them 11 months to find what they were looking for.
Tour A 'Cali Cool' Refresh By Three Birds Renovations
With a vision of ‘Cali Cool’ style, light-filled open-plan living and entertaining spaces, warm soft tones, organic textures – and a beautiful new swimming pool – are all woven into the design of this recently renovated California bungalow on Sydney’s North Shore. The owners, who have three children, bought the house in 2019, and had two main requests before handing the keys to the Three Birds Renovations team of Bonnie Hindmarsh, Lana Taylor and Erin Cayless: more space and a swimming pool.
A Sandstone Home That Makes Use of Smart Zoning
It was the light-filled living room with its decorative ceilings and original features that persuaded the owners to buy this grand 1920s house in Sydney's eastern suburbs. "I love the living room," they say. "We've had a lot of fabulous parties in it – it's the reason we bought the house. It has windows on both sides and opens out to a big verandah that has wonderful views." After buying the home in 2016, the owners made a few minor alterations.
Tropical Wonder: An Eastern Suburbs Garden Revival
Brimming with mature trees and plants, this beautiful old garden in Sydney’s east had been left to its own devices for many years before garden designer Barbara Landsberg was asked to “reinvigorate” it. “It was like a sleeping beauty,” says Barbara of the garden. “It had stood still in time essentially.” The brief was to renovate the pool area and surrounds plus create better access to the garden above, which had become overgrown. But the refresh didn’t necessarily involve making drastic changes.
This Federation Home In Sydney Represents Fusion Design At Its Finest
When the owners of this Federation beauty on Sydney's Lower North Shore first moved in, they thought they'd just change a little bit here and a little bit there, as you do. Once they got into it, however, there wasn't a lot, apart from the home's facade, that would remain untouched. Originally from Melbourne, the owners and their three children lived in Asia for a number of years before moving to Sydney and buying the four-bedroom house in 2014.
