Minister Sjoerdsma hosts roundtable conversations with civil society
Both ENDS is present at COP30 to advocate for genuine access to climate finance for locally led, gender-just climate solutions and the mechanisms that facilitate this, including those for farmer-led restoration. Furthermore, the organisation participates to ensure the crucial connection between the climate negotiations and the trade and investment frameworks that shape them.
Both ENDS: The power of trust
Trust builds trust. That is what I have learned from how Both ENDS works - within our team, with partners in joint strategies and advocacy, and in our relationships with partners as a funder. Trust is the foundation. It is what allows compassion to grow, what gives rise to hope, and what fuels real solidarity. This is especially powerful in contrast to the prevailing global trend of political and international leaders who prioritize hard measures and self-interest, ignoring relations of trust.
Both ENDS: Fair trade and equal partnerships: only then can Kenya stand on its own
Currently, however, global trade is far from equal. It’s a playing field heavily tilted in favor of wealthy multinationals—mainly from Europe and the United States—who profit often at the expense of local communities, small businesses, and the environment in countries like Kenya. Take the flower industry, for example. Much of it has shifted from the Netherlands to Kenya and other East African countries. In this industry, workers—especially women—are exploited.
Both ENDS: Cabinet turns its back on international cooperation and solidarity with callous policy letter
Elections are soon to be held in the Netherlands. The political parties are sharpening their knives and have outlined their plans in hefty manifestos. Not surprisingly, they mainly focus on domestic issues. International themes are primarily addressed in terms of opportunities for Dutch companies and threats in areas like health, privacy and competition that we need to protect ourselves against.
Both ENDS: The global rise of authoritarian regimes demands global strategies
In the Netherlands, for example, a recent policy announced last week by the extreme right-wing government proposes to reduce international civil society funding by over two-thirds. Coupled with tight eligibility requirements and strict spending criteria such as ‘contributing to Dutch trade interests’ or restrictions in terms of thematic areas and a-political work, these cuts send a troubling signal.
Both ENDS: Both ENDS's response to government letter on future cooperation with civil society organisations
DEN HAAG, 11 November 2024 - Today, the Dutch government published its policy on future cooperation with development organisations, both in the Netherlands and abroad. PVV minister Reinette Klever is putting the axe to this funding: she has decided to cut the budget for aid to international civil society by more than two-thirds: from roughly €1.4 billion to €0.4 billion in the period 2026 to 2030.
Both ENDS: Reactie Both ENDS op kamerbrief over toekomstige samenwerking met maatschappelijke organisaties ontwikkelingshulp
Both ENDS: Food security is an international issue
If the Netherlands wants to make its agriculture and livestock industry sustainable and to ensure that farmers get a fair price for their products, it will also have to look beyond its own borders. The Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products. We have a great impact because, through our trade relations, we uphold a system of intensive agriculture that destroys ecosystems and undermines local production.
Both ENDS: Both ENDS had a new director!
Our manifesto "The Dutch Agriculture Agreement reaches further than the Netherlands: offer prospects for sustainable farmers and consumers worldwide" has now been signed by over 70 civil society organisations, agricultural organisations and companies, environmental organisations and scientists from around the world. Below, a few of them give their personal motivation why they support the manifesto.
Democratic values under attack in Europe: Looking beyond the Dutch dikes and the role of Philanthropy
Last week, I read about the expected – yet still shocking – implications of the radical shift to the far-right in the Netherlands. The current coalition agreement includes measures previously adopted by other European countries with similar election outcomes, leading to a curtailment of democratic freedoms, an inward focus, and attempts to limit the role of civil society.
Both ENDS: Equality as a key for international trade
Trade has been in the global spotlight once again in recent times. Recently, ministers from around the world gathered in Abu Dhabi at the WTO for negotiations on world trade in the coming years. However, participants from civil society were silenced. Never before has their freedom been so severely restricted at the WTO. In a time when geopolitical tensions are escalating by the day, it is crucial to prioritize equality in international trade.
Both ENDS: Recommendations for Dutch foreign policy that work for people and planet, everywhere
The parliamentary elections in the Netherlands are over, and the dust has somewhat settled. No matter what government emerges from the process, one thing is clear: in the Netherlands the main focus is on the Netherlands. Foreign affairs were hardly mentioned during the elections and the same applies to the process of forming a new coalition. More alarmingly, some of the winners in the elections want to cut themselves off even further from the world around us.
Both ENDS: The Netherlands can radically reduce its agrarian footprint
Our first interview is with Karin van Boxtel and Volkert Engelsman about the Netherlands' role in the global food system. Van Boxtel is co-interim director of Both ENDS and an expert on food systems and international trade. Last year, she was co-initiator of a manifesto that calls for a Dutch agricultural policy that also works for farmers worldwide. Engelsman is an entrepreneur and pioneer in biological agriculture, and founder of Eosta. But above all, he is an innovative free thinker.
Both ENDS: Voting with a worldwide impact

Both ENDS: Karin van Boxtel
Interim director • Land governance • Africa My goal is to create more and more space for promising initiatives around the world: from farmers exchanging their own seeds in Indonesia, to women setting up food forests in Costa Rica and communities expressing their own vision on water management in Kenya. That's where the future lies. In times of a climate crisis, a polluting food system and growing insecurity for people who stand up for their rights, these initiatives offer solutions.
Both ENDS: Both ENDS welcomes new leadership: Annelieke Douma and Karin van Boxtel are interim directors!
Annelieke and Karin have been working at Both ENDS for a long time and know the organisation inside and out. They have both held various leadership roles for many years. Annelieke: "We stand for connecting leadership.
Both ENDS: Counter summit in Brussels: civil society organisations call for sustainable and fair trade
Different voice Such treaties represent 'business as usual': trade that is doing more harm than good to the planet and its inhabitants. They favor large companies at the expense of our planet, decent working conditions, jobs and animal welfare.
Both ENDS: Combating drought by protecting saplings
Communities Regreen the Sahel In various countries in the Sahel, vast tracts of land have been restored by the local population by nurturing what spontaneously springs from the soil and protecting the sprouts from cattle and hazards. Rich Forests Rich Forests promotes a sustainable and future-proof production system and supports, among other things, the transformation of degraded land into food forests.
Both ENDS: Manifesto: The Netherlands can reduce its international footprint with new Agricultural Agreement
New report: investment in agroecology necessary for healthy global food system A recent study by Profundo for Both ENDS and Oxfam Novib shows that investment in agroecology is necessary for a sustainable and inclusive global food system. Today, some 768 million – one in ten – people suffer from hunger or a severe shortage of food on a daily basis.
Both ENDS: The Future We See - dialogues about sustainable and just global systems
Trade agreements International trade agreements often have far-reaching consequences not only for the economy of a country, but also for people and the environment. It is primarily the most vulnerable groups who suffer most from these agreements.
Both ENDS: An alternative EU-Mercosur cooperation agreement is possible
Letter by 265 organisations to Merkel: “Do not sign the EU-Mercosur trade agreement” Germany must use its influence as president of the EU in the second half of this year to ensure that the controversial EU-Mercosur free trade agreement is not signed. This is the message in a letter presented to German chancellor Angela Merkel today by 265 civil society and environmental organisations from the EU and Mercosur countries.
Zuidelijk leiderschap, alleen als het ons uitkomt?
Afrikaanse leiders verwijten Europa koloniaal gedrag.

Not surprisingly, they mainly focus on domestic issues.
