By Dr. Karyne Messina It’s Barbie’s world, and I wanted to write about it. Consider that, as of March 2024, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster comedy Barbie earned more than 636 million at the North American box office, with a total of 1.45 billion earned worldwide. It now enjoys bragging rights as Warner Bros’s top-earning movie ever, surpassing the hugely lucrative final installment in the Harry Potter series. I saw the movie almost as soon as it hit the theaters. Then I watched it again. And again.
Gabe Howard Jul 22, 2023 And Other Observations DGC Press 2023 Today I talked to Gabe Howard about his book Mental Illness Is an Asshole: And Other Observations (DGC Press, 2018). Howard has an interesting story to tell. He is an award-winning podcast host, author, and sought-after speaker, but he says he wouldn’t be any of these things today if he hadn’t found himself in a psychiatric hospital diagnosed with a bipolar disorder in 2003.
CHEVY CHASE, Md. , Sept. 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Karyne Messina's new book, Resurgence of Global Populism: A Psychoanalytic Study of Projective Identification, Blame-Shifting and the Corruption of Democracy, (Routledge Publishing, September 2022), offers evidence of how populists can wrest power and sow discord while eroding democratic processes in a slow decline towards authoritarianism. The book was published today.
In 2006, long before hashtags, Tarana Burke began a grassroots “me too” movement to try and reach women and girl survivors of sexual assault, particularly women of color in low wealth communities. In 2017, actor Alyssa Milano used “me too” as a hashtag, and it went viral. While much has been written and discussed about the #MeToo phenomenon in the United States, where does it fit into the larger scale of women’s movements throughout history? When do women’s movements emerge? Why do women join?
Does the #MeToo movement offer a model for overcoming our compassion fatigue with mass shootings? How long will it be before the next mass killing on American soil rips our hearts open and has us begging for a change in the US gun laws? Be warned: It will be soon. Only last November, a gunman (the killers are almost always male) opened fire on a small church in Texas, killing 26 people and an unborn child.
