GitHub Repository Rules are now generally available
Protected branches have been around for a while, and we’ve made numerous improvements over time. We’ve added new rules to protect multiple branches and introduced additional permissions. However, it’s still challenging to consistently protect branches and tags throughout organizations. Managing scripts, cron jobs, various API calls, or third-party tooling to have consistent branch protections is not only annoying but also time-consuming.
Private vulnerability reporting now generally available Original
Today, we’re announcing the general availability of private vulnerability reporting, a private collaboration channel that makes it easier for researchers and maintainers to report and fix vulnerabilities on public repositories.
GitHub’s supply chain security features now support Dart
What do applications like Google Ads, eBay Motors, and Alibaba Xianyu have in common? In addition to millions of monthly users, each was built with the popular Flutter framework that is powered by Dart. Given its rapid growth and broad adoption – and thanks to a collaboration with the Dart team at Google – GitHub supply chain security features now support the Dart developer ecosystem.
GitHub Actions: introducing the new, larger GitHub-hosted runners beta
Today, we’re excited to announce the public beta of our larger GitHub-hosted runners for Linux and Windows. With our new, enhanced GitHub-hosted runners, you’ll get access to bigger runner sizes, fixed IP ranges, increased concurrency for your workflows, and more, so you build, test, and ship code fast. Dependabot now alerts for vulnerable GitHub Actions
A well-tuned and secure CI/CD workflow is a critical component for development teams looking to build more and ship fast. GitHub Actions gives teams access to powerful, native CI/CD capabilities right next to their code hosted in GitHub. Starting today, GitHub will send a Dependabot alert for vulnerable GitHub Actions, making it even easier to stay up to date and fix security vulnerabilities in your actions workflows. These alerts will be powered by the GitHub Advisory Database.
GitHub now publishes malware advisories in the GitHub Advisory Database
Mistakes are the most common cause of vulnerabilities in open source software, but they are not the only cause. Bad actors also attempt to introduce malicious software, known as malware, into open source. Details about malware can be hard to keep track of because malware is typically taken down and is not eligible for the usual disclosure process where vulnerabilities are assigned a CVE and placed in the National Vulnerability Database (NVD).
GitHub Enterprise
Over the past few weeks, we have released several new features to help our GitHub Enterprise customers secure and manage users at an enterprise level. Learn how you can securely manage users with GitHub Enterprise’s latest ships! Limit who can invite outside collaborators to enterprise administrators Enterprise owners can now prevent organization owners from inviting outside collaborators to repositories in their enterprise.
GitHub Enterprise Server 3.5 is now generally available

GitHub Advisory Database now open to community contributions
The world of open source security is fast moving, with new vulnerabilities and different attack vectors driving the community to continuously seek to learn more. GitHub has teams of security researchers that review all changes and help keep security advisories up to date, but often there are community members with additional insights and intelligence on CVEs that do not have a place to share this knowledge.
GitHub Advisory Database now supports Rust
GitHub is on a mission to create a more secure supply chain for all developers and organizations. To do that, we need to empower all developer communities with a comprehensive vulnerability database.
