Histories of the Undead by Kate Braverman
When Erica took a leave of absence to complete her research she knew almost immediately that she would fail. She devised lists of people to telephone, penciled in a schedule of interviews and columns with questions. Her handwriting seemed small and bruised. She called no one. She remembers now, in the long mornings when Flora and Bob are gone, that she always detested fragments. Or more accurately, the need to order them, to invent a spine, a progression, a curve that resolves.

This is a tremendous loss for the literary community and readers worldwide. She will be dearly missed. From The Los Angeles Times: “She was vivid and intense.
Shakespeare's Kitchen
Review By – December 12, 2011 For those of us who have waited patiently for Lore Segal’s next offering, Shakespeare’s Kitchen is a wonderful reward; for readers new to her work, it will be a revelation. These thirteen closely inter-related stories, seven of which appeared previously in The New Yorker, are wise, subtle, trenchant, and full of surprises.
The Wonder Spot
Review By – July 26, 2012 Melissa Bank hits the wonder spot with the story of Sophie Applebaum, who wanders through life with charm and a quirky, uncertain style. It isn’t hard to identify with plucky, vulnerable, sensitive Sophie. She gets up when she falls even while knowing she will stumble again. A cast of characters complex enough to be interesting populate her world; no pat good guys and bad guys here.
Twelve Illustrated Dust Jackets
From the collection of Martin Salisbury. Photograph: Simon Pask We’ve all been told told not to judge a book by its cover, but what about judging a decade, an artistic moment, or a society? In his latest collection, The Illustrated Dust Jacket: 1920–1970, illustration professor Martin Salisbury traces the history of the book jacket from its origins as a simple dust guard for expensive bound books to its evolution as a promotional tool meant to catch the eye.
Celebrating Kate Braverman and Other Radical Women
Marguerite Duras died on March 3, 1996, almost twenty-two years ago to the day. An astonishingly prolific novelist, she was also an accomplished director of films. Subtle, strange, canny, provocative, her work in both media lasts till this day. In honor of her work, please find below a 1970 interview with Duras, touching on her view of cinema, May '68, and much else.

I teach fourth grade batik and weave plant hangers with seashells bound in the yarns, pine cones and stones glassy from waves and age. I make ceramic vases and cups, bake breads, dance and read books. Last summer I hiked forty-seven miles alone in the High Sierras. I do not smoke or take drugs. I have lived four years in a cottage on a hill. My windows face the sky. I am responsible. Painters have shared my bed, stockbrokers and psychologists.
