Which way now? Navigating the climate finance multiverse
The 2026 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings were rich in cognitive dissonance. Sharp differences of perspective and intent were evident and conflicting views left unresolved, meaning that the next few months are likely to be volatile for geopolitics and the global economy. One way to think of this is that countries and institutions are charting a journey through the ‘multiverse’, where narratives point to different versions or perceptions of reality and a host of possible universes.
Climate change at Annuals 2025: What happens next?
The statements and actions of most of the world’s governments during the 2025 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings indicate that they are still fully committed to multilateral collaboration on climate and financial reform. The Coalition of Finance Ministers published a Climate Action Statement that included more than 500 policies across 70 countries.
Why the global transition requires adaptive and forward-looking prudential frameworks
A delayed global transition poses a risk to long-term financial stability. However, private capital is not being mobilised fast enough to mitigate that risk, especially for developing countries. Mobilising private investment at the scale needed to achieve the goal of $1.3 trillion annually for developing countries will require a smarter, more agile financial system.
Getting on the path to $1.3 trillion
At COP29, governments agreed to scale up climate finance into developing countries to $1.3 trillion per year by 2035. Since then, an already challenging outlook has now grown more complex, and the range of required levers more diverse. Climate capital is needed more than ever to ensure prosperity, security and resilience. Getting on the Path to $1.3 Trillion sets out E3G’s long-term vision for scaling up climate finance to developing countries.
Trend vs noise: Finding opportunity in a time of global economic uncertainty
At this week’s IMF-World Bank Group Spring Meetings, the forward direction of the global economy is under discussion. The route to a resilient net-zero economy may feel uncertain, but it is more important than ever. Record clean energy investments ($2 trillion in 2024) are driving renewable deployment, with renewables projected to supply over 50% of global electricity by 2050.
Finance Day at COP29 – a shift of tone in response to critical tensions
This year’s Finance Day took place in the shadow of negotiations on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). With universal acknowledgement of the scale of climate-related finance needs but contrasting views on how they could be met – and a live debate on who should step up with increased funding – the tone of discussions has been different than in previous years. There were fewer showstopping headline announcements and more discussions that grappled with real-world problems.
G20 Finance Ministers accelerate efforts on climate but need to go further and faster
The Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the G20 held their final meeting of the year on October 23–24, 2024, during the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group. Their final meeting formed part of the run-up to COP29 in Baku – where governments will negotiate a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance – and the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
E3G response to IFRS announcement
By Kate Levick, Associate Director, Finance & Resilience, E3G, and Co-Head, TPT Secretariat. E3G welcomes the announcement by the IFRS Foundation on 24 July 2024 during London Climate Action Week that it will assume responsibility for disclosure-specific materials developed by the Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT). This means that the TPT resources for best practice private sector transition plans will become part of the complementary ISSB resources for sustainability standards.
Financing the transition requires systemic change and starts now
The United Arab Emirates Presidency kicked off COP28 with a flourish by unveiling Alterra, a new $30 billion fund for climate investments. Several private sector financial firms will be directly involved and the fund will leverage finance from many more. In parallel, the UAE also created a vast amount of goodwill at the start of negotiations by operationalising the Loss and Damage Finance Facility.
Does Your Company Have a Climate Transition Plan?
The United Kingdom has just launched a major task force to help companies and the financial sector transition to net zero and meet regulatory obligations to disclose their plans by next year. The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPTF) consists of CEOS and senior executives from companies, academia and nonprofits. Kate Levick is co-head of the task force’s new secretariat.
The Financial Sector Is Decarbonizing - And It’s a Huge Challenge
Wind turbines sit just off of a traditional power plant in the Netherlands. One way to decarbonize your portfolio is to get rid of your high-emitting stocks or assets. After COP26, there’s a recognition that it’s no longer sufficient for investors simply to divest their carbon intensive assets.
Financing the COVID-19 Recovery | E3G
Photo by Arek Socha from Pixabay Anything written here about the financial policy response to COVID-19 will be out of date by the time you are reading it – we are in entirely new territory. The crisis has many aspects. But as far as finance is concerned, in the last week, on top of major stabilisation efforts many governments are now putting in place a range of measures, including distribution of money, to provide economic relief and it is likely that much more is to come.
Is Germany Ready for the Future? The Case for Action in a Climate Changed World | E3G
Germany, the largest economy in Europe, with a strong financial sector closely tied to the real economy, faces massive, potentially disruptive changes in the coming years. Specifically, these are the challenges of digitalisation, the geopolitical context, the macroeconomic slowdown and the climate crisis.
Executive Summary: Banking on Asia | E3G

Some have made more progress, whereas others appear to have only just begun. This report assesses the level of Paris Agreement alignment within the Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, China Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Korea Development Bank and the World Bank.
Venice floods show Europe needs sustainable finance to avoid disaster
Comment: A meeting in Geneva this week is a chance for a long-overdue conversation between disaster risk and sustainable finance experts In November last year, high winds combined with a seasonal high tide put much of Venice under water as well as causing the devastating loss of life and destruction elsewhere in Italy. The Venetian floods had a high cost both to the local economy and to priceless cultural heritage including St Mark’s Basilica.
Sourcing Soy: The Role of the Private Sector in the Fate of the Brazilian Cerrado
The Brazilian Cerrado — the world’s most biodiverse savannah — is being deforested at an alarming rate. Over 40 percent of the original landscape has already been cleared, largely for the cultivation of soy for animal feed. As major agribusiness companies continue to convert land into soy pastures, what role do these companies — and the businesses around the world who buy from them — play in avoiding further damage to this important ecosystem?
