The Lure of the Old Manor: Books in Which A House is Both Setting and Character
I have always been sort of obsessed with the idea that a house can be a character. Judging from the number of people who watched The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, I’m far from alone. I remember reading Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and becoming entranced with the idea of Manderley, the foggy moor, the gray sea beyond the estate’s gates. The idea that a house can embody the mood of a whole novel, how large it looms in the background, influenced much of my writing.

Summer Thrillers to Keep You Glued to Your (Beach) Chair
Summer is on the horizon — we can feel it! Spring is having some seventy-degree days here on the East Coast and that means that the beach is on our planner. Maybe not this month, but next month for sure. Day trips, weekend getaways, week-long relaxation fests; we are all itching for some salty air, the smell of sunscreen and a good — no, great — book to keep us riveted. I don’t know about you, but at the beach, I need a thriller. A dark, page-turning mystery to keep me guessing and fully engrossed.
Girls of Brackenhill
From bestselling author Kate Moretti comes GIRLS OF BRACKENHILL, a gothic thriller set in a mysterious castle in the Catskills with a reputation for stealing the sanity of women and the bodies of children. When Hannah Maloney receives a late-night call that her aunt Fae has been in a car accident, she is surprised to learn that she is her aunt’s emergency contact. After all, she has not seen Fae in 17 years, not since her beloved sister, Julia, disappeared on her aunt’s property, Brackenhill.

Review: Shadow Sands by Robert Bryndza
Kate Marshall is back! While many readers may be more familiar with Robert Bryndza’s outstanding Erika Foster series, I am a Kate Marshall fan through-and-through. Shadow Sands is the second book featuring this character, but there is no “sophomore slump” here. Shadow Sands keeps the excitement and tension level just as high as her first appearance in Nine Elms.
GIRLS OF BRACKENHILL
Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. A week after the night she chases but fails to catch a mysterious trespasser outside her town house, some unknown party texts Tempe four images of a corpse that looks as if it’s been chewed by wild hogs, because it has been.
November 2020 Book Releases
And somehow we find ourselves in November, but there’s no shortage of amazing new book releases that will be hitting the shelves! This month, there’s releases from both loved and new authors, telling tales of magic, gangs, romances, and so much more.
An Investigation at a Boston College Turns Deadly
If you’ve read one Hank Phillippi Ryan book, you know to clear your schedule for the day because you won’t be able to put the book down until you get to the twisted, unpredictable, often socially timely conclusion. Say No More (Forge Books) was no different. Say No More is the fifth book in the Jane Ryland series. I had read the first (The Other Woman) but hadn’t read numbers two through four, so I wasn’t sure if I would be able to follow the plot.

Tall Poppy Review: Considering Mental Health in Academia
The opening of Life of the Mind Interrupted: Essays on Mental Health and Disability in Higher Education (Raven Books) says, “This is a book about mental illness and academia. But this is also a book about so much more than that: it’s about grief and friendship, and collegiality, and accessibility, and tragedy.” Never has an opening line encapsulated a book so perfectly. Katie Rose Pryal’s book was eye-opening.

Edie Beckett was in her early teens when her mother, Lilith Wade, started a killing spree. When Edie was 15, Lilith was arrested for murdering six women. She received the death penalty and is now awaiting execution. The last 15 years have been anything but easy for Edie, who is now 30. She barely finished high school, dropped out of community college, and has become an alcoholic. When the story opens, though, Edie has quit drinking.
8 Suspense Novels that Explore Nature vs. Nurture - Is Evil Born or Made? Thrillers Weigh In.
The germ of the idea for my latest novel came from my infatuation with infamous crimes and the idea that your next-door neighbor, your teacher, your church pastor could be harboring inner evil. Edie Beckett, the main character in In Her Bones, is the daughter of infamous serial killer, Lilith Wade. When Edie, herself is accused of murder, she must go on the run to prove her innocence. Nature vs.
In Her Bones
CHAPTER 1 Tuesday, August 2, 2016 In Her Bones Your life is more open than you think. You think you’re safe. You have neighborhood watches and room-darkening drapes, password-protected computers, alarm systems, and garage codes that are absolutely not your firstborn’s birthday. Even with all that, it’s practically there for the taking. Anyone can find out anything about you, and sometimes, if they ask the right way, you’ll just tell them. People are too trusting. Naive.

Book review: ‘Not That I Could Tell’ is the perfect end of summer, beginning of fall read
“Not That I Could Tell” (St. Martin’s Press) by Jessica Strawser examines life under the suburbia microscope. When a group of friends gather around a fire pit in one of their backyards, wine in hand, the conversation turns both dramatic and personal. 14 Recommended Reads From Reese Witherspoon - Off the Shelf
Already beloved by millions of readers, this novel follows a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as they both try to survive the devastation of World War II. The breakout hit of 2014, this beautiful novel was a finalist for the National Book Award and it just won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. If you haven't read it yet, this one should be at the top of your spring reading list.
The Blackbird Season
Kate Moretti’s fifth novel, THE BLACKBIRD SEASON, will keep you up late flipping pages, propelled to find out what happened. It is eerie and thought-provoking, suspenseful and chilling. The story follows beloved baseball coach and teacher Nate Winters as he is faced with disastrous consequences when, after years of becoming arguably too involved with his students, he is accused of crossing an uncrossable line.
Complex Women Fiction Panel at The Book Stall
"Exceptional...a deliciously sinister glimpse into the duplicity of small-town lives and the ease with which people turn on each other when tragedy comes calling. Moretti's tale of jealousy and obsession is nothing less than dark magic. Witchery indeed." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Kate Moretti’s Favorite Modern Whodunits with Unreliable Narrators
When I started writing The Blackbird Season, my main goal was to keep the reader off their game and unbalanced. I wanted readers to constantly second guess themselves and spend the entirety of the book wondering “wait, did they do it?” I didn’t specifically set out to write an unreliable narrator (Nate says he didn’t do it and well, you’ll have to read to find out!).

Top 21 Must Read Books Coming September - JDCMustReadBooks
My Rating: TBR (Pre-Ordered) Anxiety is at an all time high, but there's a prescription for dealing with it. Max Lucado invites readers into a study of Philippians 4:6-7 where the Apostle Paul admonishes the followers of Christ, "Do not be anxious about anything . . ." Philippians 4:6 encourages the believer to "be anxious for nothing." As Lucado states, the apostle Paul seems to leave little leeway here. "Be anxious for nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero." What's he suggesting?
A Razor-Sharp Narrator Who Is No Amazing Amy
I read Jessica Knoll’s LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE when it first debuted in the summer of 2015. We were in a heat wave, and the air itself seemed to sizzle. I read it on the beach, under an umbrella and covered with a towel because I couldn’t be bothered with silly things like sunscreen reapplication and child-minding. I shushed people who tried to talk to me. Few books have sucked me in so completely, so quickly. LUCKIEST GIRL’s TifAni FaNelli is a nasty, razor-sharp narrator.
