Potentially avoidable CHF hospitalizations, US

Introduction Congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a frequent cause of hospitalization. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, in the year 2018 alone, there were nearly 5 ½ million discharges with CHF in the US. One-fifth of these were specifically for the management of heart failure as the principal reason for hospitalization.
