1. Introduction Universities are critical drivers of innovation in society. To create knowledge and develop innovative science and technology, universities need to engage and invest in innovative solutions. However, there are substantial barriers to such innovation within higher education, such as a general lack of appreciation and motivation for university teaching [1,2] and difficulty in realizing an aligned strategy for innovation in decentralized higher education institutions [3,4].
