Setting New Goals Together for the New Year
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes It was our first New Year’s Eve as a married couple. As we sat together, I shared my goals for the coming year (remodeling parts of our house and completing a big writing project) and set my priorities. I could see my new husband’s face fall. When I asked Roger about it, he tried to downplay his disappointment. “I thought we would save up for a summer vacation,” he finally admitted.
He Believed Her
What was the most shocking, scandalous thing Jesus did? Some would say Jesus was scandalous for pursuing the woman who’d bled for twelve years. At that time, in her condition, she was considered untouchable. Because being on her period made her unclean, anyone who came into contact with her would also be unclean. Some would say it was the way Jesus honored her. He told her that it was her faith that healed her. He said that not only did He see her among the crowd, but also that she was worth healing.

God’s Comfort When Troubles Don’t Stop
It’s OK. It’s not that bad. It is so much worse for other people. Everyone has bad stuff happen. Everyone is counting on me. Suck it up and push through. These are the phrases I’ve told myself over and over for the past eighteen months.
Creating the Greenhouse Effect Before Your Next Crisis
Last year when we were all at home on endless Zoom meetings, my husband craved an outdoor project. I gently suggested a greenhouse — a project big enough to get him outside daily for about a month and something that happened to be a lifelong dream of mine. By the end of summer 2020, I had the greenhouse of my dreams. We only had a couple more months of growing season, but we were able to reap a modest harvest of tomatoes, peppers, and onions from starter plants.
How to Grow Closer to Your Spouse During the Coronavirus
At first, our strategy for weathering the coronavirus was to watch too many press briefings and plow through our stash of emergency snacks during the first 36 hours of quarantine, but we soon realized that neither response calmed our nerves. We’ve also realized that a crisis can either drive a couple apart or bring them closer. We’ve determined to draw closer. With that in mind, here are five tips to come together as a couple during a critical situation.
Hope for When You Feel Discouraged as a Mom
Kimberly entered the world, took one look around and let the rest of us know she was not impressed. She cried, fussed and acted as if sleep was a complete waste of time. Everyone said she would calm down once she turned 1. Everyone was wrong. On her first birthday, Kimberly threw a fit because I wouldn’t let her play with the knife I was using to cut up fruit for her party. Maybe fit is not the right word — more like a blind rage that would drive an experienced hostage negotiator to his knees.

Connecting With Your Husband in the Everyday
It’s like we were two ships passing in the night. Something was out of sync, and my husband and I just weren’t connecting in the everyday. I think he thought everything was fine but I was frustrated by how little we communicated. He got home after I put our son to bed which left only a few brief hours together before sleep. My husband was tired from working all day and teaching jiu-jitsu after work. When he came home, he showered and sat on the couch to catch up on his favorite TV shows.
When a Failure Feels too Big to Fix
I had failed. Big time. My failure felt huge, as if someone had come into our backyard with a backhoe and dug a hole as large as our house. And now I was sitting by the hole—broken, beaten down, discouraged—trying to fill this huge hole back up with one teaspoon of dirt at a time. For me, this feeling of having failed big time—so big that I couldn’t imagine any hope of repair—happened in my coaching business. Have you felt failure? Maybe you’ve felt this way, too.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 17: Ship Those Boxes Out
It is shipping day! Today is shipping day! Grab your packages, buy yourself a Starbucks, and brave the post office (the lines won’t be nearly as long this early in the game). To make this day painless, take some time earlier in the week to familiarize yourself with USPS.com, print out labels, and pack everything up so it is ready to go for pick up.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 15: Get Those Stockings Ready
It is time to make a plan for stockings! Spend time today deciding how much you would like to spend for each one and/or how many gifts you would like to put in each. Next come up with a system for storing and keeping stocking gifts organized. Once you are planned out, it is time to start shopping. You can buy a few stuffers each time you go out this month if you have not already started stockpiling. Online shopping is another easy way to shop for stockings.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 14: Prep Your Kitchen
It’s time to give the kitchen a little TLC and prep your kitchen for the holidays. Spend some time today clearing any clutter hanging around your counter tops. Put away mail, Christmas cards, leftover Christmas decoration containers, etc. Also, here are some basic tips of things you can do to spruce up quickly. Assignment: Clean your sink up so it is nice and shiny. Clean out any science experiments from the fridge. Wipe out your pantry, fridge or cupboards of tiny crumbs.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 13: Decor Day
“It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go.” Today is the day to start making your home look like Christmas — decor day! It is time to get out all of your Christmas decorations. You don’t have to do all your decorating today but get a start on things, especially outdoor decorating. If you live in a climate with a cold winter season, you need to get those lights and decorations out before the snow starts (if it hasn’t already).
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 12: Catch up on Your Projects
Today is another freebie day, and we are more than halfway there! Use this day to catch up on any projects you have been meaning to finish and cross them off of the list! Nothing feels better than to put a checkmark on your list. If you are already all caught up on all of your projects, use today to bless someone. Maybe you could pay it forward to someone at the restaurant. Or bless the gas attendant with a random act of kindness card with $10.00 inside.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 11: Get Your Recipes Together
That favorite fudge recipe you always make, that delicious marinated carrot recipe your mom used to concoct, and Aunt Edna’s pumpkin pie recipe are yearly Christmas treats. The problem is every year you have to search to find them. Wouldn’t it be great to have you recipes together in one place? Assignment: Gather your holiday recipes and organize them.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 10: Gather Your Elf Supplies
Originally, this project was going to be “buy your stuff,” but I know that all of us probably have enough gift wrap, tags and ribbon to supply Santa’s workshop. Problem is, most of us find it December 26th. So dig through your basement, garage, spare closet or under the bed and gather together: wrapping paper ribbon tissue paper tags, etc. Scotch tape scissors Assignment: Elf supplies Once everything is rounded up in one place, put it into a container to keep it together.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 9: Gifts for Out-of-Town Friends and Family
Plan ahead for gifts for out-of-town family and friends Refer back to your gift giving list to identify anyone who will require their gift to be shipped, as these gifts for out-of-town family/friends can take extra thought. Now think of the least stressful ways to make this happen. A gift card to their favorite store or restaurant is a great gift and extremely easy to ship. You can also ship gifts directly to people from whichever website you are ordering from.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 5: Schedule Your Time for the Holidays
If you don’t plan your time, someone else will. During the holidays it is especially important to schedule your time in advance so you have the time to do the things that are truly important to you. Schedule your time for the holidays For example, I schedule downtime. Life gets very stressful over the holidays, and I schedule time just to relax and wrap gifts with music playing or to kick back and read a book.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 3: Pick Your Christmas Card Picture
If you’re not sending a Christmas card this year, or you’re sending a card sans family photo, you get to sit this project out. For the rest of us, it’s time to sit down and choose a photo or choose a date to take or pick your Christmas card picture. Enjoy this project by inviting your family to help select the photo this year. Maybe enjoy some Christmas cookies and cocoa as you look back on the memories you made together over the year.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 2: Put Together Your Christmas Binder
The Christmas binder is going to be your friend for the next few weeks. You know–the kind of friend you count on to help you keep your sanity. Your friend should reflect you, but more importantly, the vision you have for your family Christmas! Yesterday you made a list of what is important to you for the holidays. What it would look like for you if you started fresh this year. Use your mission statement and go from there.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Project 1: What is Your Christmas Mission?
Assignment: Create your holiday/Christmas mission statement In order to enjoy a peaceful holiday season, you may have to let go of some things you’ve always done. It’s time to focus on what brings you and your family joy. Make a list of what you normally do around the holidays, as well as what you’d like your holiday season to look like. After your list is complete, circle or highlight what is most important to you and your family. Next, cross out what you can let go of this year.
Get Yourself Organized for Christmas Pre Project: Prep for the Christmas Project
Thinking about Christmas can be both exhilarating and exhausting. Thinking of all there is to do, buy, bake, cook, wrap, plan, organize, clean, and the list goes on. It is no wonder many think about the holiday season with dread and forget the true meaning of why we celebrate. Whether you are filled with magical wonder or dread, one thing is for certain: ready or not, Christmas is going to happen. Christmas is just a day.
3 Signs it May be Time to Break Up with Your Friend
Take a close look at the friends you surround yourself with. Do you need to change (maybe even eliminate) some of those relationships? My friend Kate showed up out of breath and about forty minutes late. “Sorry I’m running behind, guys! Gregg got home late from work.” She sat at our table on the restaurant patio with the mostly eaten plate of taquitos and mini tacos and caught the eye of the waitress to order her iced tea. She was ready to settle in for some serious girl talk.
Enlarging Your Faith: Never Say Never
Shortly after getting married, in fact it was on our honeymoon, when I slipped into my flirty pajamas, jumped into bed next to my husband and exclaimed, “OK, I’m ready!” and he asked, “For what?” I replied with the obvious response, “To pray together … you know, a couple that prays together, stays together? That is what my mom always says.” To which he replied, “I will NEVER pray with you, that just isn’t something I do.

Who Owns Who? The Battle With Possession Obsession
When my students and I read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, one line—spoken by the murderous creature to Victor Frankenstein—always gives me a cold chill: “Slave … You are my creator, but I am your master; obey!” Each year, I tell my class, “This is such an apt personification of addiction. What starts as a small habit, seemingly under our control, quickly morphs into a monster that takes complete control of our lives.” I speak from very painful, very personal experience.
What to Do in the Waiting
by guest blogger, Rachel Lewis “Today, I am trying to cling to the hope in the midst of an unknown future that lay ahead of me. At times, I just want to fast forward a year, till I know how everything has turned out . . .” And I pondered, what to do in the waiting. Facebook reminded me of this post I made a year ago. We had just found out we were pregnant. After 4 consecutive losses. I didn’t know if I should prepare my heart for a loss, or for the possibility of a live baby to bring home.

The 4 Day Love Challenge - Day 2: Love Him with Stuff
I get frustrated at times with the idea we all get to determine how much our partner loves us by the size of the gift and whether the gesture of love went viral on YouTube. Yuck. We don’t need over the top. I think we just need a little something special for our men, presented in a slightly special way. Let’s learn how to love him with stuff in Day 2! I wrote about this in my book The Marriage Project: A tree ran into my car. Yes, you read that sentence correctly.

I didn’t have my daddy leave me when I was a little girl, as Lysa Terkeurst recounts of her story in her new book Uninvited, but I have felt the slap of rejection. The time when my seventh grade school friends planned a birthday party for everyone else, but not for me. The time I blew it with a close friend, and I asked, “Do you still love me?” And the answer was, “A little less right now.” The time I was passed over for a job that I felt capable to do, in favor of a younger, more talented woman.

Episode #214-Take Hold of the Faith You Long For with Sharon Jaynes
Take Hold of the Faith You Long For On the outside, many women are well-put-together Christians with trendy shoes, beautiful children, and wide, white smiles. A Relationship-Crushing Lie (And the Truth That Busts It)
My father-in-law regularly repeats a joke that used to do the macarena on my last nerve. “Your mom and I have a great relationship. Want to know the secret?” he’d ask my husband and me with a smirk. “Low expectations.” As a woman of exceedingly high standards for myself and my relationships, I’d snort, roll my eyes, and think, “How sad!” Twenty six years of marriage and about a decade of personal soul searching have changed my view of the joke, however. My father-in-law is on to something.
