Saved from Despair ... by Worms?
How a Manistee mom turned a miniature effort to combat climate change into a thriving business. By Patrick Sullivan | Jan. 30, 2021 A couple of years ago, with another child on the way, Elana Warsen said she had a sort of miniature existential crisis — she wanted to do something to make the world a better place, but she wasn’t sure what to do. Warsen, who lives with her husband and three children in Manistee, found the answer under her feet, in the ground.
Quite a Month
Spectator By Stephen Tuttle | Jan. 30, 2021 Well, that was quite a month for at least some members of the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners. First, Commissioner Brad Jewett introduced a resolution opposing the latest pandemic restrictions issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The totally pointless document claims the orders are unconstitutional because the legislature did not authorize them.
Peekaboo, America
Guest Opinion By Mary Keyes Rogers | Jan. 30, 2021 As infants, we take delight in playing the timeless game of peekaboo. Mommy or Daddy’s happy, loving, and reassuring face momentarily disappears, only to return with a loving smile and a happy face when we uncover our eyes. This is more than just fun and folly. In playing this game, babies learn the lesson of object permanence, the concept that even though you can’t see Mommy with your eyes, she still exists. Seems like a good thing to know. Right.
Fuel My Life
Mindful consumption of nutritious food made easy By Janice Binkert | Jan. 30, 2021 The shopping, chopping, preparing, and portioning of mindfully nutritious food are perhaps some of the most daunting and time-consuming tasks in our daily efforts to eat and live healthfully. But what if you could get some of that time back? Time with your family and friends. Time for your passions. More time for yourself. Enter Fuel My Life.
A Gun-fearing Woman Walks into a Gun Range
An afternoon with Like a Lady Firearms Training By Kathryn Bertodatto | Jan. 30, 2021 Guns scare me. I didn’t grow up around them, my parents don’t hunt, and my father doesn’t have enough enemies to justify keeping them for self-defense. Guns are polarizing — they’ve become a political symbol. Love them, and you’re Right; hate them and you’re Left. Write about them, and you’re an idiot likely to alienate half the population. Hello, my name’s Katy, and I’m a writer so … help me, God.
Firefly’s Wildflower Martini
Bottoms Up By Lynda Wheatley | Jan. 30, 2021 January’s mild temps notwithstanding, who Up North couldn’t use just a nip of springtime now and again? On a recent gray day, we slipped into one of Firefly’s toasty little greenhouses — literally toasty; a small space heater in the back enabled us to slip off all our winter gear and sit quite comfortably — and found, to our delight, a Wildflower Martini ($12) on the menu.
Blue Tractor’s Pork Mac & Cheese
Tastemaker By Lynda Wheatley | Jan. 30, 2021 Though the pandemic prevented us from bellying up to the Blue Tractor bar every Sunday to watch the Lions play, when restaurants open again Feb. 1, we can look forward to recapturing at least one part of that our longstanding tradition: Sitting in one of Traverse City’s coziest football-viewing spots while soothing our crushed souls in a bowl of the most comforting comfort food we know, Blue Tractor’s Pork Mac & Cheese ($15).
Join the Marley Party, Mon!
Love Live outdoor birthday bash for Bob Marley at Jacob's Farm By Lynda Wheatley | Jan. 30, 2021 Marley music, Jamaican jerk chicken tacos, hot dogs, cocktails, hot cocoa, sledding, snowshoeing XC skiing, bonfires, igloos, and more — and the whole family is invited? Believe it. From noon to 6pm Saturday, Feb. 6, Jacob’s Farm in Traverse City is hosting Love Live, a free outdoor party to celebrate the birth of the one and only Bob Marley, and we can’t think of a better way to spend a winter’s day.
Big Trouble in Sparty Land
Michigan State University (MSU) finds itself in deep trouble, much of it self-inflicted. The Larry Nassar nightmare appears to be the tip of a much larger iceberg. Nassar is the pedophile sexual predator who used his position as doctor and athletic trainer for both MSU and the U.S. National women's gymnastic team as a platform for decades of abuse of girls and young women. The first complaint against him was made in 1997; he was finally fired from MSU in 2016.
A Sister’s Pain | Features | Northern Express
Michigan State Police Sergeant Melvin “Paul” Holbrook was murdered by his wife in 2009; his sister recalls years before his death she believed his wife was capable of killing him. Meleen Froman said she wants to speak about Joni Holbrook following a Jan. 15 Northern Express feature in which Holbrook talks about the challenges she’s faced following her release from prison in 2017. She served half of a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty in Benzie County to second-degree murder.
Stepping Up to the Plate: Housing Solutions Right in Our Backyards
“One absolutely cannot tell, by watching, the difference between a .300 hitter and a .275 hitter. The difference is one hit every two weeks.” ? Michael Lewis, Moneyball Getting to first base is critical to winning: That’s a fundamental lesson learned through analysis of baseball stats in the 2011 film Moneyball. Teams can chase home-run hitters and speedy base runners all spring long, but if they want to win, their players must get on first base. Consistently.
Tinder in a Tiny Town
Dating is tough. Dating in a small town is even tougher. It can be difficult to meet someone here who hasn’t already dated three people you know. My former boss at The Loading Dock (remember that place?) used to say, no one breaks up here, they just lose their turn. Apps like Tinder and Bumble make dating into a sort of game. It’s addictive. Swipe, swipe, maybe read a bio or two. Women get to sift through photo after photo of dead deer and fish.
The Hot List | Features | Northern Express
If you’re looking for love, the Northern Express this week is the right place. In honor of the impending holiday of hearts Feb. 14, we’re unveiling a hot list of single ladies and gents nominated by friends, family, or coworkers, and whittled down by the Express staff. All have been judged to be smart, sane, fun, active, emotionally intact, employed, and — let’s be honest — pretty damn cute. Interested in pitching yourself as a potential date or mate to one of these fine folks?
MacMaster and Leahy on Love
Canada’s favorite Celtic super duo — and love story — are returning to Traverse City this month. The Northern Express grills MacMaster about their musical life, what it’s like being married to your work, and touring the country with their (nearly) seven kids in tow. MacMaster and Donnell Leahy are no strangers to Traverse City.
Food for Thought’s Great Lakes Pear Organic Preserves
Every September Leelanau County organic farmer Gene Garthe drops off a 600-pound box of fresh-picked Bosc Pears. The folks at Honor’s Food for Thought peels and dices each precious fruit, then transforms the lot into a limited number of Great Lakes Pear organic preserves. The lightly textured and softly sweet golden goods FFT calls old world preserves, we call other worldly. But most recently, the Good Foods Awards upped us all, naming the product a 2018 winner in our region’s preserve category.
Get Revved Up for Festival Season
Need another reason to get out of Dodge and into some warmer weather this spring? The Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival (April 1–4 in Okeechobee, Florida), has announced it will feature sets by Arcade Fire, Bassnectar, Leon Bridges, and more.
Moon Taxi - Let the Record Play - RCA
The first outing at the new major-label home for Nashville indie-rock band Moon Taxi is an interesting switch-up for the band, in that the label shift seems to have pushed the band toward more polished, radio-ready tunes — and farther from the melodically catchy and significantly hipper tracks they were producing before.
A Northern Michigan Cocktail Tour
It's officially summertime in northern Michigan, which means boats, beaches, and plenty o’ cocktails. If you’re still ordering the same ole, same ole vodka-soda, you’re missing out on some seriously spiced up summer fun. Craft cocktails are an art form here in the Mitten, and our local bartenders are shaking up pre-prohibition cocktails and saucy island drinks with Up North flair, bringing you unique blends of flavors with fresh herbs, juices, and locally distilled and infused liquors.
