Poll: Abortion restrictions affect college decisions in Northeast
STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE THE COMPETITION among colleges for students is intensifying, and state laws banning abortion are among the new considerations for students and families. A recent poll of students and families in nine Northeast states found that 76 percent of students do not want to attend school in a state where abortion is restricted, and three quarters of parents prefer their child to attend school in a state without restrictions, according to results released on Tuesday.
Senate budget embraces in-state tuition for undocumented students
SENATE LEADERS unveiled a budget proposal on Tuesday that embraces in-state tuition payments for undocumented Massachusetts students, rejects calls for expanding the state Lottery online, and sets aside enough funding for a future tax relief package that is in the "same ballpark" as what the House approved. The $55.8 billion spending plan, scheduled to be debated next week, will complete the public budget cycle on Beacon Hill.
Senate budget boosts RTA funding, backs fare-free buses
RTAs, which operate local bus networks across the state outside the MBTA's service territory, have long had a line item in the state budget. After adjusting for inflation, however, the state's basic operating support for the RTAs actually declined 5 percent between fiscal 2016 and 2023, according to the left-leaning Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center. Wind farm developer seeks to reopen power contract
The Baker administration is in a bind on offshore wind. The state desperately needs the power from proposed wind farms off the coast, but the largest of those wind farms now says the contract price it agreed to in April and affirmed in May is no longer sufficient to build out the project. Commonwealth Wind blames the war in Ukraine, the runup in interest rates, supply chain constraints, and inflation for dramatically increasing the cost of the project.
Adapting to water rather than fighting it
TEN YEARS AGO, Superstorm Sandy - after ravaging the Caribbean and much of the East Coast of the United States - turned inward and exerted its full force on New York City and the surrounding region, leading to tens of billions of dollars in damages, crippling the city's subway system, and causing widespread power outages. Officials have attributed over 100 deaths to the storm, with 44 people dying in New York City alone, and countless others were directly and indirectly affected by the storm.
Outside money pours into state auditor's race
OUTSIDE GROUPS are pouring money into the race for state auditor between Democratic Sen. Diana DiZoglio and Republican Anthony Amore, a possible signal that the race may be tightening with just a week to go until Election Day. A super PAC with ties to Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday reported spending$100,000 on digital ads over two days last week opposing the candidacy of DiZoglio. The $100,000 in attack ads came after $100,000 in digital ad expenditures on behalf of Amore.
Olmsted inspiration: Use parks to address climate change - CommonWealth Magazine

Five priorities for Boston’s waterfront - CommonWealth Magazine
THE LANDSCAPE of the upcoming Boston mayoral race makes it abundantly clear that the city’s biggest priorities—housing, education, economic opportunity—will be considered through a new lens, one more reflective of its diverse residents. Creating a waterfront for everyone through planning and a leading-edge approach to climate change must also land on that list of priorities.
