Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

With a book publishing background, my first journalism job was a freelance gig on the reduction of window falls in New York City.

How is social media changing news?

Social media continues to serve news gathering, while threatening traditional media as a competitor.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Twitter, Wordpress; Feedly; Tumblr; G. Hangouts; InCopy; Hootsuite; Facebook; Canva; SoundCloud; Skype; iMovie; Google Docs//Sheets; K4 (CMS)

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, by far, is the most integrated into my work.

Who do you wish followed you?

There's a variety of creative thinkers out there, who would be great to engage with. But you can just do that.

Why did you become a journalist?

To help tell the story, and as an editor, to enable others to tell and share their stories effectively.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"License to Hack," a feature I wrote a few years ago. I interviewed two teens who accessed their school system and "messed around."

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Stay curious and persistent - this is a very interesting time in the media. And support one another!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Vague ideas, there have been many... See, I can't remember them.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

There are deeply entrenched misconceptions around libraries: that the institution is all about dusty books and in decline.
