These behavioral science-backed practices can help leaders build a hybrid learning approach that maximizes impact for everyone thrust into a world of remote working and hybrid learning. by Sebastian Bailey June 7, 2022 Agile and flexible working is non-negotiable. Employees are likely to quit if they don’t get it. We’re also in a massive skills shortage, with CEOs rating it as one of the top five risks to their business.

For Refugees, Asylum Just First Step Toward Equality
Antonio Tijerino & Katie Nielson RealClearPolicy October 26, 2021 Nearly 37,000 refugees from Afghanistan are settling across the country in what is just the first stage of the largest resettlement operation seen in the United States since the end of the Vietnam War. The effort serves as a sudden and urgent test of President Joe Biden’s approach to refugees and immigrants following the harmful and restrictive policies of the Trump administration.
For Refugees, Asylum and Acceptance are Just First Steps Toward Equality
Nearly 37,000 refugees from Afghanistan are settling across the country in what is just the first stage of the largest resettlement operation seen in the United States since the end of the Vietnam War. The effort serves as a sudden and urgent test of President Joe Biden’s approach to refugees and immigrants following the harmful and restrictive policies of the Trump administration. Early signals from the Biden administration had already suggested a shift to a more welcoming America for immigrants.
We cannot afford to leave immigrants out of the workforce diversity conversation
Earlier this year, Apple announced it was embarking on an ambitious $100 million initiative aimed at promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the technology industry. Apple is one of many major companies in recent months to make such promises following last year’s historic protests around racial injustice. The movement has prompted countless business roundtables and sweeping public commitments to increasing workforce diversity.

There is a national shortage of skilled workers, and it is only projected to get worse. At the same time, we have had an influx of both refugees and immigrants who are often trapped in low-wage jobs without the potential for promotion or advancement simply because they do not have the English language skills they need for further professional development.
For Learners
Usually, when I tell people that learning a language is learning a skill, like cooking or surfing, I get nods of understanding. That seems to make sense, intuitively. And then when I go on to say that, because those are skills, they require copious amounts of practice and individualized instruction, I still get nods, and people are receptive when I go on to paint an even clearer picture. Where this breaks down is when people try to actually apply this theory to setting up a language program.
The US has a skills gap problem—and it’s ignoring its most obvious solution
The United States will admit just 18,000 refugees for the coming fiscal year, the Trump administration announced this past fall. That’s the lowest number of refugees legally relocated to the US since 1980, when Congress established its current resettlement program. This new restriction reinforces the disappointing trend that has already led to historic lows of resettled refugees under Trump—even as the number of refugees worldwide has risen to the highest levels since World War II.
The Benefits of Voxy for Complete Beginners
One of the questions I get asked all the time about Voxy is whether or not the platform is appropriate for beginners. And I understand why people ask this: Our platform is largely in English, and learners at all levels encounter real-world examples of English in action, which means that they will always be seeing words they haven’t yet learned.
Rethinking How We Offer ESL to Adults
In the United States today, we are capable of meeting the needs of just four percent of the adult immigrants who need access to educational services. This is distressingly low, but there’s action we can take to address this issue and far better serve this population. Clearly, it’s time to dramatically rethink how we offer English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults.
Evidence That Live, Online Instruction Works
Last week on the Blog, I talked about the benefits of live instruction, pointing out that virtual live instruction can be even more accessible, and, therefore, more effective than in-person classes. This week, I’d like to look at some data showing exactly how effective virtual live instruction can be.
