The Versatile Structural World of Methanedi- and Trisulfonic Acid and Their Salts
1 Introduction Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) is the simplest organosulfonic acid and was first reliably reported by Billeter in 1905 [1]. With a pKa value of –1.9 (0.1 M aq.), MSA can be classified as a strong acid [2]. After the development of optimized preparation pathways [3, 4] and industrialization of the production, MSA became prominent as a metal plating agent, an electrolyte, as a Brønsted acid catalyst, and for metal descaling [5, 8].
Brominated Methanesulfonates: Characterization of K[Br3CSO3] ⋅ H2O, K2[Br2C(SO3)2] ⋅ H2O and K3[BrC(SO3)3] ⋅ H2O
1 Introduction The simplest organic sulfonic acids are based on methane, CH4. Formally, the acids are obtained by insertion of SO3 into the CH bonds of CH4. Accordingly, the molecules CH3SO3H (methanesulfonic acid), CH2(SO3H)2 (methanedisulfonic acid), CH(SO3H)3 (methanetrisulfonic acid), and C(SO3H)4 (methanetetrasulfonic acid) are possible derivatives.

Front Cover: The Molecular Structures of Lithium Trichlate, Li[Cl3CSO3]⋅2H2O, and Lithium Tribrate, Li[Br3CSO3]⋅2H2O (Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. 16/2024)
Graphical Abstract The Front Cover shows the structure of the tribrate Li[Br3CSO3] ⋅ 2H2O. The anion in this compound and the anion in the corresponding trichlate, Li[Cl3CSO3] ⋅ 2H2O, are the bigger siblings of the well-known triflate anion. Even if the compounds are salts, they exhibit a molecular structure with the anions, the lithium cations and water molecules are arranged into dimers according to {Li2[X3CSO3]2(H2O)4] (X = Cl, Br).

Cover Feature: Triflate's bigger brother: The unprecedented tribrate anion, [Br3CSO3]− (Chem. Eur. J. 11/2024)
Graphical Abstract Triflate's bigger brother: The unprecedented tribrate anion [Br3CSO3]– is flanked by its smaller siblings, the triflate and the trichlate anions. The new big brother was obtained by bromination of phenyl methane sulfonate with KOBr, followed by splitting of the ester under basic conditions. The new anion was studied through X-ray diffraction of its potassium salt. Furthermore, the thermal decomposition was investigated, and the Raman data of the anion are reported.
Triflate's bigger brother: The unprecedented tribrate anion, [Br3CSO3]−
Introduction Trifluoromethane sulfonic acid, CF3SO3H, commonly abbreviated as “triflic acid”, is an important and well-known derivative of sulfuric acid. The acid and their salts, so-called “triflates”, have various applications, e. g.
