The Business World Has the End-of-Summer Blahs
I’m Kristen Bellstrom, and this is Bloomberg Opinion Today, an embrace of the strategic direction of Bloomberg Opinion’s opinions. On Sundays, we look at the major themes of the week past and how they will define the week ahead.
A luxury travel bubble is swelling
WHEN you go on vacation, do you ever treat yourself to an upgraded airline seat? Or book the (admittedly cheapest) room at a five-star hotel? Maybe splurge on a spa day or celebratory Michelin-starred meal? If any of this sounds familiar, you may be what the travel industry calls an "aspirational" luxury traveller. And much to the industry's potential dismay, you're also inflating an economic bubble that may be about to burst.

The ski industry is ignoring Gen Z
Many of the problems facing the ski industry have been on prominent display this season. There were the ski patrol strikes that all but shuttered Park City Mountain Resort over the holidays, outrage over lift tickets climbing above $300 a day, and of course, the omnipresent threat of climate change. But there’s one challenge to the sport that has been largely under the radar: skiers are old — and getting older. The median age last season was 37 — that’s up from 30 a decade ago.
The Ski Industry Is Ignoring Gen Z
The number of people hitting the slopes each year has flatlined because of a business model that alienates new and younger skiers. Many of the problems facing the ski industry have been on prominent display this season.

Most of What You Pay at the Pump Is Taxes
The world could not function without crude oil and its associated products. For consumers, it delivers gasoline, diesel and a host of other transportation fuels, and enables the development of plastics, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and much more. For producers, the revenues derived from this natural resource are vital for their economies and populations.
Iran’s Nuclear Program Returns to the Fore
The question of reviving the "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action" (JCPOA) or the P6+1 Agreement (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, as well as the European Union) and Iran, has returned to the fore. Concluded on July 14, 2015, after years of negotiations, the primary objective of the agreement was to find a diplomatic solution, the only realistically feasible path to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
America 2024: The Debate and the Vote… and the Arab Absence
The presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris has overwhelmed everything that has happened in the race to the White House over the past week. The debate in Philadelphia, "the cradle of liberty," had been highly anticipated. The Democratic candidate appeared before the Americans in this capacity for the first time since President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and chose her as his replacement.
An Autumn of America’s Rage
Why is it that we disagree on when autumn begins when compared to the other three seasons? Is it because autumn has unique characteristics that are not found in other seasons? Or is it because, despite also being the season of plowing and sowing, autumn has unfairly been singled out as a metaphor for anger, aging, and the beginning of the end? The Greek philosopher Aristotle says that one swallow does not make a summer, meaning that the sight of swallows in the sky is a sign that summer has begun.
