What was your first job as a journalist?

Senior reporter at The Muse, Memorial University of Newfoundland's students' newspaper.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I failed horribly.

How is social media changing news?

By making journalists more directly responsible, and responsive, to their audience.

William de Worde

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To tell stories with a strict adherence to the facts as you know them.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By succinct emails.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My macbook, my digital recorder, Microsoft Word, iTunes, and my smart phone.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook. It's more like an addiction than favouritism.

Why did you become a journalist?

To meet interesting people and ask them nosey questions about their lives without much resistance from them.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I started it along with some friends.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A series of articles on successful practices in aboriginal education for The Tyee.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Writing for free is great practice, but don't do it for more than two years.
