Bristol Rovers pays tribute to Kevin Miller
We are all saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our former goalkeeper Kevin Miller, on 15th September, at the age of 57. The Falmouth born shot stopper enjoyed a long and distinguished Football League career with Exeter City (two spells), Birmingham City, Watford, Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Derby County, Southampton and Torquay United. He joined Rovers, from Exeter, in July 2003 and went on to appear in 72 league games whilst at The Mem and was club captain in 2004/05.
70th anniversary of Rovers' win against The Busby Babes
Just two lines from Tote End Boys, the Rovers anthem written by the late Ben Gunstone, and while younger Bristol Rovers supporters may not appreciate the significance of the date, it’s the anniversary of a famous Rovers victory over Manchester United, the team known at that time as the Busby Babes.
Rovers win the Watney Cup on this day in 1972
On this day in 1972, Bristol Rovers beat Sheffield United in the final of the Watney Cup in front of 19,768 at Eastville. Sponsored by the Watney Mann Brewery, the competition ran for just four seasons, from 1970 and was open to eight teams, two from each of the four divisions that had scored the most goals in the previous season and had not been promoted or qualified for European football.
Former Players Association enjoy 2025 Annual Golf Day
The golfing gurus amongst the Rovers' Former Players gathered at The Kendleshire Golf Club for the annual 'hitting a ball with a thin stick around many acres of stunningly beautiful countryside' on 11 June. Whilst the number of teams entering was down this year, the number of former players taking part was up and walking into the main reception area was like stepping into a dressing room full of former footballers from different eras.
Celebrating our 1974 promotion!
The Bristol Rovers History Group and Keith Brookman look back at the very memorable 1973/74 promotion season. What a season that was! We went 27 games unbeaten at the start of the season and this run lasted until 2nd February when Rovers lost 1-0 at Wrexham. Incidentally, the last five games of the previous season saw us unbeaten too. This run included the famous record 8-2 away win at Brighton in December, then managed by Brian Clough.
Blue Diamond Club with Dawn Astle
It’s only a small step, but with Dawn now working closely with the PFA, further positive changes are likely. What shone through during Dawn’s talk to Blue Diamond Club members was a daughter’s love for her father, a family’s fight for justice and for making sure that future generations of footballers are made aware of the dangers associated with our wonderful national game and putting a support network in place for those affected by this terrible disease.
Obituary - Josser Watling
JOHN ‘JOSSER’ WATLING How sad it is to learn of the passing of former Bristol Rovers player John ‘Josser’ Watling, the last surviving link with the glorious Rovers side of the 1950s. Born in Bristol on 11th May 1995, ‘Josser’ served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and survived being on a boat sunk by Nazi warships off the Russian coast.
Obituary - Colin Dobson
Colin Dobson Bristol Rovers was saddened to learn that former Rovers midfielder and player-coach, Colin Dobson, passed away in Middlesbrough on 16th February, at the age of 82. Born on 9th May 1940, in Eston, Cleveland, Colin turned professional with Sheffield Wednesday in November 1957 and in almost a decade with the Hillsborough side scored 49 goals in 177 league games, though he was left out of the FA Cup Final side when Wednesday were beaten 3-2 by Everton.
Sinclair, Thomas and Taylor join Rovers Centurions Club
Two players joined 'The Centurions Club' when Bristol Rovers hosted Reading in the Gas' final fixture at The Memorial Stadium of the 2024/25 season. Scott Sinclair and Luke Thomas entered the fray as second-half substitutes to reach the landmark. Playing 100 league games for one club is something of an achievement in this day and age when players are frequently on the move.
Ellis Harrison | A career retrospective
Written by Keith Brookman EARLY DAYS From being a young dressing room joker who wasn’t that confident in his own ability, Ellis Harrison has matured into a fine footballer over the years and he’s certainly a much better player now than when he first left the club for Ipswich Town back in 2018.At that time, it’s doubtful if any of us thought that we would, some years later, see him back playing for the club that first gave him his opportunity in professional football.
Celebrating 70 years since Geoff Bradford scored for England
Born in July 1927, Geoff Bradford is, perhaps, the most famous player ever to don the blue-and-white quarters and remains the only player to represent England whilst on the club’s books. His one and only appearance for his country came 70 years ago today (October 2) when he scored in a 5-1 England victory in Denmark. He scored 242 goals for Rovers in 461 league appearances and was top scorer in five different seasons, and scored 11 league hat-tricks.
