Navigating the world of modern safety advice
Keith Hole says it’s okay to get lost while navigating the modern profession. In a world where the role of the safety advisor has morphed into that of a generalist, covering everything from traditional health and safety to the environment, sustainability, governance, wellbeing, quality and more, how do you make sure you are giving your employer or clients the right advice and staying up to date with all the advancements in each of these fields?
Has safety changed too much?
Keith Hole candidly reflects on a changing profession. Over the past 30 years that I have worked in the occupational safety and health profession. I have seen the role of the safety engineer transform into that of an advisor as processes and controls become ever more embedded into the way we work. When I started my journey in the construction industry the real focus was on the safety of ‘things’; a very tangible type of advice and prevention.
It’s Time to Think Outside of the Confined Space
A confined space sounds like something that is really easy to define, doesn’t it? But that’s not always the case. When does an area that is enclosed become a ‘confined space’ and why are some areas that seem pretty big classified as confined spaces? In this article you will find guidance on how to identify a confined space, work out when a confined space isn’t a confined space, and perhaps make you think of some confined spaces that you might not have considered before.
Putting Your Best Foot Forward
When you think about Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) what is the first thing that comes to mind? For most, safety footwear is high on the list, and on the surface, this might seem like a simple ask – just make sure you provide safety footwear – but when you start to look a bit more at the question there are many other factors to consider. Who is the footwear for? What are they doing that necessitates the protection? Are you their employer? Are they a volunteer?
Reaching the Heights of Safety
Falls from height can result in nonfatal injuries as well as fatal ones. In the UK construction industry, of the 196 fatalities in the five years up to and including 2016/2017, 49% were related to a fall from height1. In the year 2016/2017, 18% of the 5,055 non-fatal injuries in the UK construction industry were related to falls from height2. It’s not just in the UK where falls from height are an issue.
