GenCost doesn't just rule out nuclear, it makes solar thermal impossible to ignore
Blink and you may have missed it. With much of the coverage of GenCost focusing on the costs of nuclear energy, an important finding may have been overlooked that has the potential to unlock the deployment of a renewable technology that is ideally placed to replace retiring coal plants, such as Eraring, and help make Australia a renewable and manufacturing superpower.
It's time for a smarter RET that recognises flexible generation
So here we are in an election campaign. The opposition is advocating a 50% renewable electricity target by 2030 – as are several states – and the current federal government continues to suggest negative consequences from too much renewable generation. It seems Labor will go the election with the actual detail of how 50% might be achieved saved for later. That is probably good as what we don’t need is rushed detail that fails to carefully anticipate future perverse outcomes.
Devil's in detail, but Finkel may have gotten it just about right : RenewEconomy
On June 9, the much anticipated Finkel report on the future stability of Australia’s National Electricity Market was released. This was an independent committee inquiry lead by Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel. The Finkel report’s gestation and birth have been accompanied by very high expectations within the renewables and energy sectors, as well as energy consumers and politicians. The report contains many detailed recommendations.
What do we sell when they don’t want our coal?
To meet the Paris climate goals of limiting global warming to 2°C requires a complete global decarbonisation of all energy use by around 2050. Reading these columns and elsewhere of recent times one could almost be excused for thinking that electricity is the only way we use energy. It has reached the point that in common discourse the word ‘Energy’ has started to be used when the meaning is ‘Electricity’.
A gentle reminder: CST power plants with 10+ hours of built in storage are available now
A Renewable Energy Target which rewards all generated MWhs equally has driven the successful uptake of the cheapest technologies for creating MWhs – what a surprise! Building large LNG export plants connected to the East Coast gas system has pulled gas prices up to world parity – what a surprise! Our oldest and most polluting coal plants are being retired by their owners at a time when they are reaching the end of their economic life and the world is looking to limit GHG emissions – another...
Why Australia should not abandon world-leading solar boost technology
Several Prime Ministers and two Queensland Premiers ago, the Kogan Creek Solar Boost project commenced near Chinchilla in Queensland. This was to be a 200,000m2 array of Linear Fresnel concentrators providing extra steam to the Kogan Creek coal-fired power station and so generating an extra 44MW of solar electricity from the turbines.
