How can the NHS work effectively with patients and the public?
Like many other patients helped by the NHS, I came away from my experience wanting to ‘give back’. I spent six months in the hospital and still receive follow up treatment on a monthly basis. You see a lot in six months in a hospital – both the truly good and the fantastically awful. Compassionate nurses sat with me while I cried, desperately wishing someone would wave a magic wand and make me better.
Let’s be frank about the NHS
Yet NHS propaganda comes with the implicit threat of Kitchener’s finger. Without our zealous support, the health service could well be snatched away. ‘Save the NHS!’, the placards scream. For if we are deprived of our health service, who will cure the sick, who will deliver babies, who will save us in our hour of need? And so we clutch the NHS to our bosom. We must protect it; ensure it doesn’t change; never a bad word must pass our lips.
Public expectations of the NHS | The King's Fund
The measurement and impact of shifting expectations are very slippery subjects – but we’re unfortunate enough to be living through an extraordinary live experiment in expectations management in the public sector that points to their vital impact. In particular, the consistent and long-term ‘austerity’ messages, telling us we can’t afford the public services we might once have had, do seem to have affected our expectations. You can see that by bringing together just two key pieces of information.
Engaging the public in designing the future for the NHS | The King's Fund
In a guest blog for our public and the NHS project, Michelle Dixon, Director of Communications, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, reflects on how important public engagement will be in designing a workable future for the NHS. BBC2’s Hospital – the 2017 documentary series that featured Imperial College Healthcare’s five hospitals – challenged my thinking about the relationship between the NHS and the public.
Close Contact Casting vs Surgery for Initial Treatment of Unstable Ankle Fractures in Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Question Does close contact casting (a molded below-knee cast with minimal padding) compared with internal fixation surgery result in an equivalent functional outcome for adults older than 60 years with an unstable ankle fracture? Findings In this randomized equivalence clinical trial that included 620 adults from 24 hospitals, ankle function measures, which included postfracture symptoms, quality of life, pain, ankle motion, and mobility, were equivalent at 6 months in both groups.
The Value of Using Harry Potter to Teach Politics
It’s pretty clear by this point that J.K. Rowling just can’t let Harry Potter go. In addition to frequently posting new material on her Pottermore site (some of which has been quite badly received), she’s written a new play that promises to continue the story of the fateful trio. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which premiers July 30th in London, is set 19 years after the events of the last book.
How effective are platelet rich plasma injections in treating musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become increasingly popular in sports medicine and orthopaedic practice as treatment for muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries, and has received media attention because of its promise as a regenerative therapy.1 2 PRP is an autologous preparation of a patient’s whole blood, which is centrifuged or filtered, allowing separation of a fraction containing a supraphysiological concentration of platelets (fig 1⇓).
Harry Potter casts a spell on accident prone children
Methods and results We undertook a retrospective review of all children aged 7-15 who attended our emergency department with musculoskeletal injuries over the summer months of a three year period. Weekend admissions were counted as those occurring between 8 am on Saturday and 8 am on Monday. The age range was based on that of reading competence on the advice of an educationalist.
