Levenshulme neighbourhood guide
The city centre is great and all that but if you overlook Greater Manchester’s boroughs you’ll be missing out on an awful lot of incredible food and drink. It’s in the burbs that creative seeds of businesses germinate, flourish, and often go on to pollinate elsewhere. Levenshulme has plenty of examples of this but there are also loads of unique places that you could only ever find in Lev.
Three Michelin starred L’Enclume’s chef Tom Barnes is opening a restaurant in Manchester
Since the age of 18, chef Tom Barnes (yes, him off the Great British Menu) has only ever worked in restaurants with multiple Michelin stars. He was in charge of the kitchen at Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume when it won its third star in 2022. Next year, he’ll be opening his own restaurant, called Skof, right here in Manchester. So he’ll be aiming for a star, right? “I’ve worked since I was 18 in restaurants that are either two or three Michelin star level,” he tells Finest, without flinching.

Örme in Urmston
When you think about posh tasting menus, you might think of a luxurious hotel in the Lakes or a posh Yorkshire pub, or even an expensive Michelin star restaurant in Ancoats. You probably wouldn’t come up with a tiny former café on a row of shops in deepest Urmston. But the truth is, one of Manchester’s most exciting new openings this year is in Urmston. It’s a tiny restaurant called Örme and it’s doing monthly changing tasting menus for just £45 a head. We went to investigate.
The best gigs and club nights in Manchester August 2023
If you thought a Manchester summer was a washout in terms of gigs as well as weather, well you'd only be right about one of those things. Never mind the torrential rain, that just means gigs and clubs are even more enjoyable. A heat wave and a writhing crowd do not make the best bedfellows anyway. Far from a mere smattering of gigs, our Manchester gig guide for August features an absolute deluge. Read on for our guide to the best gigs and club nights in Manchester this August.
New opening: Diecast has finally landed in Manchester
It was one of the most anticipated new openings in Manchester for 2023 and now after almost two years in the making Diecast is open for bookings - at least phase one: Leno Ex-Machina is. Launching with an extravagant four day opening party from 6-9 July that sold out in seconds, Diecast pulled out all the stops with writhing, half naked dancers, massive pizzas and THOSE daiquiris that have nearly broken Instagram and TikTok all weekend.
Seven Manchester restaurants in Good Food Guide’s 100 best local restaurants list
The Good Food Guide has announced Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants. Compiled from an initial list of over 37,000 public nominations, all of the restaurants in the list have been inspected by Good Food Guide inspectors. First compiled by Raymond Postgate in 1951 who put together a crack team of restaurant inspectors with the aim to "raise the standard of cooking in Britain’ and ‘to do ourselves all a bit of good by making our holidays, travels and evenings out in due course more enjoyable”.

This year, the food stalls at the festivals will be in good hands.

There are a few festivals in and around Manchester this month including indie ones, house ones and Caribbean ones and there are plenty of gigs too. From big 90s R&B pop stars to scrappy little punk bands, Manchester is characteristically packed with opportunities to watch some live music this month.
Little Blanchflower is bringing craft and ambition via fresh pasta to Chorlton
When you think about the Altrincham success story Blanchflower, the first thing that springs to mind is brunch. Following last year’s opening in Sale, Blanchflower now has a hat trick with Little Blanchflower which recently opened in the Old Creameries site in Chorlton. With this new site, owner Phil Howells wants to show there is so much more to what they do. It’s kind of poetic that Little Blanchflower has ended up in the old Creameries spot.
A huge late night market is taking over Love Factory in July
Normally you have to wait until Xmas to get a chance to do some late night shopping, and even then you have to buy stuff for other people. But good news for people who prefer to shop after dark and ideally with a glass of something fizzy in hand, The Night Market UK is returning to Manchester. The Glasgow-born travelling Night Market UK has been popping up at venues since 2019 and following last year’s successful event at Victoria Baths, it’s back in Manchester for 2023.
Only two Manchester restaurants make the UK Top 100 at National Restaurant Awards 2023
Ynshir in Wales was once again crowned best restaurant in the UK at the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards this year. Moor Hall in Ormskirk came second and was given the kudos of best restaurant in England. The awards are overseen by Restaurant magazine (formerly Big Hospitality) and are seen as a reliable barometer of hot kitchens UK-wide. Only 15 of the Top 100 are in the North of England with the highest entry after Moor Hall being Pine in Northumberland.
Dragon Oriental - a Hong Kong style cha chaan teng in Manchester's Chinatown
Casual Hong Kong restaurant Dragon Oriental opened in Chinatown in mid-March. Co-owner Matthew tells us they noticed that there was a lack of typical Hong Kong style restaurants - or cha chaan tengs - in Chinatown. Loosely translated as "tea restaurants”, these affordable, low key Canto-Western spots are very popular with Hong Kongers like Matthew. So he decided to build one here. The grade II listed building that houses Dragon Oriental was vacant for a while before they moved in.
'If you stand still, you lose it' - an interview with Lisa Goodwin-Allen of Northcote
Lancashire restaurant Northcote has held onto its Michelin star for 27 years. Five years into that winning streak, chef Lisa Goodwin Allen joined the ranks at just 20 years old. The culinary powerhouse has now been a crucial part of that award winning team for two decades. In 2017, when longtime mentor Nigel Haworth moved on to new adventures, Goodwin-Allen rightly became Executive Chef.
'I was a bit of a pancake king' - chef Simon Shaw on seven years of El Gato Negro Manchester
It feels like everyone loves Manchester’s trailblazing tapas restaurant El Gato Negro. Not just the Mancs and tourists that pack it out week after week, but Michelin too. Awarded a prestigious Bib Gourmand in 2017 that it has held onto ever since, El Gato was the only Manchester restaurant with that accolade for years until the Sparrows won one in 2023. It’s something El Gato's chef-proprietor Simon Shaw says he never takes for granted.

Best places for coffee in Manchester
Where are the best places for a damn fine cup of coffee in Manchester? Whether you like yours flat and white or 'black as a moonless night', Manchester has the goods. There are some people who only care about getting caffeine into their bodies as quickly as possible, then there are those that want to savour the flavour, for whom coffee is a sacred art form, and for whom beans, equipment and barista skills are something worthy of worship.
Huge new steak restaurant Canteena to move into the former Sale Foodhall
The closure of Sale’s Foodhall earlier this year was cause for concern for the South Manchester town’s otherwise thriving food scene. But a new restaurant has announced it will move into the vacated space. Canteena Bar and Grill is the new tenant for the former Foodhall space. The project comes from Danielle Condron and Lisa Kettle whose much loved Sale pub The Bridge also closed earlier this year.
Team behind YES and Ox Club to preside over food and bevs at Factory International

It’s just been announced that a newly launched collaborative operation called Super Serve will oversee the food offering at Factory International. The new company brings together two established operators in the region, Solitaire Restaurants and Square One, known for YES in Manchester and Ox Club in Leeds.

The Estrella Damm sponsored awards are organised by Restaurant Magazine (Formerly Big Hospitality). Launched in 2007, organisers say the awards “celebrate the brilliance and vibrancy of the UK’s eating out scene, and reward the very best chefs, front of house staff and restaurants the country has to offer”.
Vino Buono - the Heaton Chapel Italian deli and wine shop that’s almost a restaurant too
“It’s not a restaurant,” says Davide Puglielli, owner of Italian deli and wine shop Vino Buono, “Though people seem to think it is.” With its mismatched wooden furniture, pretty crockery, and cabinets displaying shiny wine glasses of all shapes and sizes, the place looks like the tiny Italian bistro of our dreams - so we can understand the confusion. Davide is originally from Rome but lived for a long time in Venice.
Leeds noodle and dumpling restaurant Mr Su to open in Manchester
Breaking noods: Modern casual Chinese restaurant Mr Su has announced it will be opening in Manchester. The Leeds-born brand was founded by Jimmy Su, who reportedly has over 25 years of experience in working in top restaurants in Dubai, China and here in the UK. This new opening is yet another in the wave of Leeds food and drink brands to be imported to Manchester, joining the likes of Bundobust, North Brewing Co, Slap and Pickle, and the still long awaited House of Fu (taps fingers impatiently).
A rock opera about Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair is coming to Salford
In the latest edition of things nobody asked for but we got anyway, an opera about the life of Tony Blair co-written by comedian Harry Hill is heading to the Lowry Theatre in Salford this October. First look: specialist hot chocolate cafe Knoops opens in Manchester
A cafe selling 22 different types of hot chocolate has opened in Manchester. Moving into the former Chop’d site on Cross Street, we visited Knoops on the morning of opening (21 April) to try some hot chocolate and chat to the cafe’s founder. Knoops is named after founder Jens Knoop. His name is of Dutch origin - though Jens is originally from northern Germany - and it translates as “button”. A cute coincidence as he essentially sells chocolate buttons.
Fold Bistro: Marple’s new restaurant has an Exec Chef with a star spangled CV
At 37, Ryan Stafford has done more than most lads from small villages do in double those years. The Exec Chef at the helm of the recently opened Fold Bistro & Bottle Shop was born in Marple and has returned to open his own restaurant after years travelling the world cooking for the most famous people you can think of. He reels off a list of names: Trump, Obama, Clinton, both of the Bushes, Kwasi Kwarteng, Boris, Liz Truss.

Who’s on the line up for this year’s Manchester Guitar Festival?
I tried virtual reality meditation at The Lowry Hotel's Re:Treat spa
I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to sit and do nothing. Most of the time I am doing at least two things at once. I’m that constantly fidgeting person who never seems to pause for breath. I know it’s not healthy and I’ve lost count of the amount of times people have suggested meditation. Sit down cross legged and stare into space for more than two minutes, maybe even up to an hour?! Nope. Not for me. I just can’t switch off.
From Manchester to: Palermo Sicily to learn about Sicilian wine
We visit Palermo Sicily for a four day masterclass in Sicilian wine - and show you where to buy it in Manchester By Kelly Bishop | April 12th '23 Merlot and Chardonnay, who? Lately, I’ve been browsing the shelves of Manchester wine shops for Sicilian wine made from Frappato or Catarratto or Grillo. Blame it on a press trip to Palermo Sicily that I was invited along to last November.
From Les Halles to Manchester: Petit Paris deli has world-class oysters and 50 types of French cheese
Good delis in Manchester city centre are few and far between, despite the fact that more people than ever now call the city their home. Quality independent food shops that give city-dwellers a chance to skip the shrink wrapped sorrow of the supermarket are very welcome.
Three Manchester restaurants added to the Good Food Guide for 2023
Hot on the heels of the latest Michelin announcement which was frankly a bit underwhelming for Manchester, the Good Food Guide has now announced three new Greater Manchester additions to its guide for 2023. The Good Food Guide has been around since 1951 but has changed hands a couple of times over the years. Most recently, it was acquired by Adam Hyman of CODE Hospitality in 2021. It continues to be a reliable guide to the British dining scene.
An Ancoats bar is giving away 50 free kebabs to celebrate its new takeaway Kiosk
Ancoats bar The New Cross quietly opened its doors in October 2022. This laid back, pared back neighbourhood spot with its whitewashed brick walls, vaulted ceiling and functional wooden furniture has a refreshing substance over style approach. Not that it doesn’t look good, but the focus is more on fostering a convivial atmosphere with weekend DJs, great beer and natural wine (with plenty of soft drink options too) - and subtly great food.
New restaurants and bars opening in Manchester in April
Spring has sprung and with it comes new life. Baby birds crack open their shells and emerge bleary eyed into nests stuffed with diligently collected washing line fluff. Green shoots start to unfurl from the ever damp Manchester soil. And all around us, fledgling coffee shops, bakeries, and pubs take their first shaky steps in the suburbs.
‘British produce is the best in the world’ - chef Shaun Moffat, Edinburgh Castle
Crates of striped spaghetti squash, purple swedes and muddy potatoes are piled up in the corner of the upstairs restaurant at Ancoats’ Edinburgh Castle when I arrive to chat to head chef Shaun Moffat. It looks as if there is a pop up organic farmer’s market on. But these treasures are produce for the kitchen that Shaun has decided to put on display as a visual reminder of the importance of provenance to him and his team. South Africa born Shaun has only been in Manchester just shy of six months.
Home Contemporary Chinese - a new restaurant with a dedicated in-house dim sum chef
“We weren’t ready to open,” says Jason Wu, owner of Manchester’s newest Chinese restaurant, Home Chinese, which opened in March with little fanfare on the corner of Richmond Street and Chorlton Street in the Gay Village. “In Chinese cultures dates in the Chinese calendar are quite superstitious," he explains, "It was a good date in the calendar.” We catch up with Jason less than a week after the restaurant opened its doors.
Onda: a 'new wave' pasta kitchen is moving into Exhibition
From the teams behind Lizzo-approved Manchester brand Gooey and elevated pizza pop up Rise, comes the newest addition to Exhibition on Peter Street, Onda - a modern pasta kitchen. While Gooey is a familiar name on many Manchester foodie’s lists, Rise has been a bit more of a cult underground hit. If you’re not familiar with the brand or its owner Sam Astley Dean, then here’s a potted history that might whet your appetite for his fresh new project.
Three restaurants in the North West awarded new Michelin stars for 2023
Tyre company turned gastronomic guide Michelin has announced its new stars for 2023 and three restaurants in the North West have got themselves a shiny new red plaque for the door. The Michelin star announcements are always a nail biting moment for fans of hen of the woods, lovage and bread made with animal fat. This year’s northern awards were as usual scattered around the great British countryside while the cities were mostly overlooked. Which northern restaurants won a new Michelin star in 2023?
Rudy’s to open Manchester pizza school - and give away 5,000 free pizzas
Rudy’s pizza is opening its 18th venue this year in the former Dawson’s Music on Portland Street. This, the brand’s third Manchester city centre pizza spot, will be a bit different as it’s also going to house a pizza school for any budding pizzaiolos. But there’s more. Rudy’s will also be giving away 5000 pizzas to celebrate the new opening. The new Portland Street Rudy’s is a biggie, covering 8,000sqft and spanning two floors.
Manchester City Council announces independent review into how it supports small music venues
The story of Manchester music venue Night & Day vs the Council continues. Last week, the venue announced it would be going back to court with Manchester City Council. The talks between the two parties aimed to resolve the long-term row over a noise abatement notice out of court. Unfortunately, they have ended without resolution. In case you missed this story, a noise complaint was made by a resident who moved into a flat next to Night & Day in 2020.
A Balkan-inspired supper club with Serbian orange wine is coming to Elnecot in Ancoats
Elnecot and Alive Wine are collaborating on their second supper club. This one takes influence from the fresh, smokey and fermented flavours of the Balkan region, inspired by the dishes of Alive Wine founder Tami Doncic’s Serbian childhood. Elnecot’s owner and Head Chef Michael Clay - one of Manchester’s most creative and underrated chefs - has developed his own unique interpretations of dishes from Tami’s family recipes.
The Black Friar Salford is hosting an Easter weekend event for kids and adults

Manchester pie makers win big at the British Pie Awards 2023
The annual British Pie Awards took place on Friday 10 March in Melton Mowbray and the North was well represented. As usual, Britain’s upper crust turned out for the ceremony where pies were assessed by 140 judges from food writers, to flour makers to, *checks notes*, vicars. The British Pie Awards is open to all producers of pies sold commercially in the UK as long as the pies entered are available to buy during the year of judging (9 March 2022 - 10 March 2023).
We tried the new six-course tasting menu at Spanish restaurant La Bandera
Tapas is lovely and all that, but how about six courses of Spanish and Canarian food with matched wines? We went to try the new tasting menu at La Bandera. At Finest, we’re all about hidden gems and La Bandera is the kind of place that flies under your radar if you're not careful. Savvy Manchester foodies know that this little, long-standing restaurant on a back street just off King Street West is serving some of the best Spanish food in the city.
Top chef Simon Wood teams up with the chefs of the future for a special event
Manchester has an impressive number of excellent restaurants and Wood Restaurant, the fine dining operation from Masterchef winner Simon Wood, often comes up high on the city’s 'best of’ lists. But if your budget is more than Lambrini than Lanson, you still have a chance to try the kinds of dishes that you’d find at Wood by attending Simon Wood’s upcoming event at The Manchester College.
