Abstract Landscape structure may facilitate or inhibit the dispersal of species by presenting barriers or opportunities. Slow dispersing edge specialists are likely to be most affected by local topography and land management practices because they require two different adjacent habitats within their limited dispersal range. The northern hairy wood ant, Formica lugubris, requires adjacent forest and open habitats to access aphid honeydew, invertebrate prey, and direct sunlight for thermoregulation.
Introduction Plants are under constant attack from a range of organisms, both above- and belowground (War et al., 2012). These ecological interactions are significant for ecosystem structure with both predator–prey (top-down) and producer–consumer (bottom-up) interactions often chemically mediated (Raguso et al., 2015). This mediation takes the form of small molecule metabolism, which controls information transfer between organisms, both aboveground and in soils (Bouwmeester et al., 2019).
Abstract Semiarid rangelands are identified as at high risk of degradation due to anthropogenic pressure and climate change. Through tracking timelines of degradation we aimed to identify whether degradation results from a loss of resistance to environmental shocks, or loss of recovery, both of which are important prerequisites for restoration.
