Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Releases Three Opinion Letters
On April 12, 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Wage Hour Division released three opinion letters regarding the legality of certain arrangements under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and Title III of the Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA).
You're Not a Victim, You're a Survivor
Sexual assault is a topic that people tend to tip toe around because of the stigma and victim blaming, but I will be upfront; I was sexually assaulted when I was in high school by a man I knew and trusted. Typing that sentence brought back so many horrible but necessary memories. I think it is important as a survivor that we acknowledge what has happened to us. For a while after it happened I asked the textbook questions: was it something I did? Could I have prevented it somehow?
We Are Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl
The "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" is a popular cultural cliché that keeps coming back. The phrase was coined by film critic Nathan Rabin who defined it as, "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” We all know these characters, they do not grow themselves, but they help the main character, a man, find himself.

What I Learned From My First Major Breakup
Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a holiday centered around love, but it is also one of the biggest break up days of the year. Let’s face it, breakups suck no matter what end of it you’re on and ending the relationship with your first love leaves a bigger impact than most. But there is a lot we can learn from our first real heartbreak. I was in a relationship with a boy I was convinced was “the one” for 3 years in high school.
Concert Etiquette
Wear What You Want Since I started going to concerts, it has been highly debated whether it is acceptable to wear merch of the band you are seeing in concert. As ridiculous as that may seem, there is reasoning behind it. Concerts used to be the way to spread the word of bands like the one you are seeing, specifically obscure ones that others may not have heard of. However, we now live in the age of the internet so we can find music much easier.
Winter Break Expectations vs. Reality
Winter break is a period of time to take a well deserved break from school work and enjoy five weeks of freedom. It seems like you'll get to do everything you want to, but the break is never what you expect it to be. Expectation: Seeing all of you high school friends Reality: You’ll probably hang out with one or two, but the rest of your time will be spent hoping that you don’t run into any one else at the grocery store because you are so over the college conversation.
The Last few Weeks of the Semester as Told by The Office
When you wake up one day and realize all the deadlines you've been putting off all semester are coming up.
There's Nothing Wrong with Sexy Halloween Costumes
There has always been a debate on whether it is acceptable to dress "sexy" (some would say slutty) on Halloween. As a woman who doesn't want to be seen just as a body I have grappled with this issue myself quite often. Am I abandoning my morals by catering to what men want to see? Am I putting feminism back a few years? But it's my body and if I choose to show it off a little bit on Halloween what's the harm?
Jesse McCartney Comes to CalU
Whether you were there for the show or you were one of the unlucky ones who missed out on a ticket, the fact that Jesse McCartney was coming to Cal was all anyone could talk about for months. I will admit that when SAB (the Student Activity Board) announced that Jesse McCartney was going to perform I was puzzled yet intrigued. I had no idea that the man behind "Beautiful Soul" was still making music or touring after years of silence.
