All the decisions, detailing and engineering, design work, and training have been made - it's over Original
All the decisions, detailing and engineering, design work, and training have been made - it's over by Ken Read 27 Aug 20:49 PDT As we all are aware, the America’s Cup Trials haven’t technically started yet, but for all practical purposes, the America’s Cup is over. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent. All the decisions, detailing and engineering, design work, and training have created a unique DNA for each program. The die has been cast. Time will tell who made the right calls.

Knowledge is power
Not sure electric is for you? We dispel the myths surrounding electric propulsion. By 2030 every new car sold in the UK will be electric or hybrid. Marine electric propulsion technology is also progressing fast. Companies like Brittany Ferries are planning hybrid vessels for 2024, demonstrating that this technology is for more than small boats. Like all new technologies electric propulsion has its early adopters, expounding the benefits of cleaner, quieter boating.
Shootin’ the Breeze... with Shane Mugan, founder of Ultimate Boats
Q Last year Ultimate Boats unveiled a fully recyclable leisure boat. Can you tell us about the DANU™ technology used? SM: We developed and patented DANU, a fully recyclable composite material. Unlike fibreglass, which is notoriously difficult to reuse and often ends up in landfill or on the seabed, DANU is designed for circularity. Its superior mechanical strength and negligible switching costs means it is an excellent replacement for fibreglass and carbon fibre.
Shootin' The Breeze... with Clair Connibeer
We catch up with Clair Connibeer co-owner of Encounter Cornwall, offering kayak trips, kayak hire and stand-up paddleboard lessons and tours, along with mega SUP hire on the stunning Fowey Estuary in Cornwall. Q When did you first get into watersports, and which is your favourite? CC: Growing up in Cornwall and on the edge of the Fowey estuary, I have been lucky enough to be involved in a number of different watersports throughout my life.
The Bouncing Bomb
This month we have been discovering more about the fascinating story behind the bomb that could skip across water. It is perhaps a sad reflection on the British psyche that one of the popular TV adverts from the early 1990s featured a drinker of a well-known brand of lager ‘bouncing’ his towel across the swimming pool to land it on a prime location Spanish sunbed, all to the tune of the Dam Busters theme.
Hot Topic: OUTBOARD ENGINES VS INBOARD FOR SAILING BOATS
Boat builder Matt Newland, from Swallow Yachts, explains the benefits of using outboard engines on sailing boats, and why he continues to choose Yamaha outboards to power his range of 20 – 26ft daysailers. As a boat builder, you want to ensure that you are building a boat that is truly fit for purpose for your clients. Our boats combine a classic look with modern and efficient performance, a performance that we have found is enhanced by using outboards as opposed to inboard diesel engines.

Shootin’ the Breeze… with Bob Trimble
Bob Trimble, Chairman of Cowes Week Ltd and Cowes Combined Clubs. AAS: How old were you when you began boating, and what was your first boat? BT: I crewed on Fireballs as a teenager. My first ‘boat’ circa 1979 was a ‘Sea Panther’, an early UK made sailboard. I had recently come across a sailboard for the first time whilst part of a seismic survey crew on a huge inland lake in the Congo.
The Ocean Race: A journey like no other
By Ken Read, President of North Sails In recent years, offshore competitive sailing witnessed a dramatic rise in popularity and awareness. This sector of our sport pushes sailors, their boats and their equipment to the limits, and races like The Ocean Race are among the most physically and mentally demanding challenges known to man. Unsurprisingly, the race has come to be known as ‘the Everest of the Seas’.

Hot Topic: Looking for a quick boat sale?
National Boat Buyers specialises in purchasing second hand boats – power or sail – that owners are looking to sell quickly, but how does the process work? Here the team explain how they came to the final valuation of a 15-year-old boat after its owner had decided to sell. We made our way down to Lymington Marina to inspect a 2008 Sealine SC35 after our valuation was accepted by the owner.

Q Your first role in the marine industry was with Cougar Marine as a boat builder. How did that come about? PG: I wanted to work in the marine industry, but failed to get into Vosper Thornycroft. Then I saw an advert for a trainee boat builder with Cougar Marine in Hounslow.

LD: I am Sailing Designer, but I was previously a Product Developer working with the design team and liaising directly with our factories on the production and development of our technical sailing collections.

Ken Read: The legacy of the '88 Games — How Calgary and region can elevate sport to benefit all
Article content On-snow, we did all of our training in Europe or in the southern hemisphere, as there was limited snow-making facilities and few proper training venues at our existing ski resorts. Canada did have a core capability to run events, but limited experience at the major international level. Article content I competed against programs based in Europe that could access glacier venues for summer, national training centres for physical training and monitoring, and multiple winter venues.
Winterstart! From unconventional roots to Iconic venue.
The Lake Louise World Cup John Kucera racing Lake Louise Credit GEPA Photo It’s been more than a great run; it’s been awesome. As the world gathers in Lake Louise, it may be the final visit of the “White Circus” to the Canadian Rockies. However, the cherished event and its 42-year run originated most unconventionally. The inaugural Lake Louise World Cup ‘make-up’ race changed the course of Olympic history.
Dave Ryding: World Cup winner, setting new standards
Dave Ryding: World Cup winner, setting new standards This Saturday on the famous “Ganslern” slalom hill at Kitzbuhel, 36-year old David Ryding of Great Britain broke multiple barriers. Perhaps the most important to him was becoming the UK’s first World Cup winner in 55 years of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. Ironically, his win came within the week of our sport celebrating 100 years since the first ever slalom race, which was run in Mürren, Switzerland.
‘Why the economic argument for heat pumps is flawed’
A domestic heat pump installation project (Image: Dreamstime/Welcomia) Ken Read MCIAT offers a reality check for headlines that eulogise air source heat pumps in the battle against climate change. An article about banning gas boilers, appeared in the Mail Online, on Wednesday 26 May 2021, it stated in relation to air source heat pumps, (costing £11,000 to install).
Read: Our culture is community. Time for us … to shine.
When you combine smart and passionate people with a shared vision, an openness to change, a culture of innovation, and a spirit of collaboration, good things will happen. – Dr. Jim Taylor Ski racing is essentially a simple sport. There is a start, a finish and the best time between the two takes the laurels. At the most fundamental level, ski racing is an individual sport.
The Streif ….
The 80th running of the International Hahnenkamm-rennen is in the books. The names of Jansrud, Mayer and Yule are now part of the legendary event. The Streif and Ganslern are now quiet. Waiting …. In our world of ski racing, the Streif has become synonymous with the ultimate challenge. The extreme test of downhill, on a classic track steeped in tradition that snakes along the north face of the Hahnenkamm. Since 1931, this is downhill racing at its’ best. My bond with the Streif began through a gift.
Och laddie … you always reminded us to make it fun. A tribute to our friend, Fitzi.
Imagine learning to ski on a plastic slope. For thousands of youngsters in Edinburgh, Scotland the Hillend ‘dryslope’ ski centre was the introduction to our sport. A 400 metre long piste covered with plastic matting serviced by a chairlift. Now imagine graduating from a ‘dryslope’ to become one of Great Britain’s best ski racers, an Olympian and taking on the best in World Cup competition. That was our “Fitzi”.
We are still winners.
It was a healthy debate, full of passion. We pushed and prodded the merits of hosting a major sporting event. And while the outcome may not have been what many would have liked, the topic of sport – specifically Olympic and Paralympic sport, took centre stage. A decision was reached. And sport carries on. Photo credit: Malcolm Carmichael, Alpine Peak Photography The sport community is so much more than just the Games.
An open letter to Mayor Nahed Nenshi regarding the 2026 Games Bid
We want you and your fellow Councillors to make an informed decision regarding 2026. When it comes to hosting major events, which we define as World Cup events, Canadian sport has been responsible, accountable and must work within our means. Staging annual World Cup events means finite budgets, working with existing infrastructure and delivering events under the exacting eye of FIS Race Directors who hold all Organizers to very high standards.
Ken Read’s predictions for the 35th America’s Cup
Bermuda will host the 35th America’s Cup from May 26 to June 27, with six top teams battling it out to win sport’s oldest prize. As the first race looms, we ask Ken Read, ACTV commentator, president of North Sails and two-time America’s Cup helmsman, to give his predictions… Much has been made of crew fitness, but all the crews will work hard enough that eventually they will even each other out.
White Circus - Weiß Zirkus - Cirque Blanc
Each winter, the Calgary region hosts up to seven annual World Cup events. Another four winter sports stage World Championship or quadrennial World Cups. Alberta is home to eight of the twelve winter National Sport Organizations. Canadian Sport Institute Calgary has matured into the largest of Canada’s seven Sport Institutes. In 1981, when a fairly obscure western Canadian city called Calgary won the right to host the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, none of this existed.
Meetings Are A Skill You Can Master, And Steve Jobs Taught Me How
Apple encourages big thinking but small everything else. That is, if you feel the urge to speak or act in a manner reminiscent of anything you learned in a big company, it’s best that you do that in the privacy of your own home. Meeting size is a good example. Once Chiat/Day was installed as Apple’s agency of record and we’d settled into our work, we would meet with Steve Jobs every other Monday. Typically there would be no formal agenda.
Steve Jobs Almost Named The iMac The MacMan, Until This Guy Stopped Him
The lump on the table was truly mysterious and held everyone’s rapt attention. Hidden under a gray sheet it was impossible to discern any detail from it. We were going to have to wait for the big reveal when the meeting was called to order. This would definitely not be our typical product briefing. Beneath that sheet was the home computer that was going to save Apple. Not to get overly dramatic about it, but that’s exactly how it was billed by Steve himself.
