What was your first job as a journalist?
Intern in NYC for what was then called the McNeil/Lehrer Report, & now is called the News Hour on PBS. After: Intern WDSU TV/New Orleans.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yep: Smith Corona. Gave it to someone in my apartment complex in DC in 1991.
How is social media changing news?
If news travels fast, it travels a lot faster now because of Twitter and Facebook, among others.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Early on, it was to report the news. Evolved into inserting my voice into longer stories. And, now, it's about thought leadership.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email and possibly with a follow up phone call after that.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The phone, mostly, including Skype. Shoe leather too, especially when traveling. And, of course, the internet.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter and now I'm warming to Facebook.
Who do you wish followed you?
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr
Why did you become a journalist?
To be in the eye-of-the-storm in terms of relevant and current events.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I take pride of authorship on all of them.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be humble, deferential, and love what you do.
When's the best time to pitch you?
When I'm not traveling. I try to read or skim all emails otherwise.
