George Best at 80 - by Kenneth Cranham
Mine’s a double: Best opens Edwardia, his Manchester boutique, 1967 I left RADA at Easter in 1966 and managed to become part of the acting company at The Royal Court Theatre. I was exactly where I wanted to be, doing small parts and understudying. My father had taken a job in Hastings. So he bought a house in the Old Town and moved there with my mother and much younger brother I rented the actor Simon Ward’s basement flat off the Essex Road in Islington.

Kenneth Cranham on Elvis
Elvis Presley would have been 90 on January 8, 2025. I was first struck by him when I was a 13-year-old boy in Stockwell, in 1957, when his second film, Loving You, came out. The closing sequence, with Elvis wearing denims – which he regarded as work clothes – was sensational. At the time, one critic said Elvis would never be as wild again. His beauty and energy were exceptional.

When Kenneth Cranham performs Rudyard Kipling, he thinks of the late Josephine Hart, the writer and poetic pioneer
In February, I’ll be performing a selection of poems by Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen and Robert Lowell and I’ll read prose by J B Priestley. The show explores the poignant experience of human beings in war. The first third of the show will be Kipling. His poems take me back to Bill Gaskill (1930-2018), the theatre director at the National Theatre and the Royal Court. I was in eight plays directed by Bill, including a part as Len in Saved by Edward Bond at the Royal Court.

Olly goes to Hollywood - Kenneth Cranham
When Kenneth Cranham acted in Oliver!, he loved the American production values – and was photographed by Harry Secombe In 1967, I was given the role of Noah Claypole in the film of Oliver!. What luck. Five days’ filming at £50 a day – and, at the same time, playing Hal in Joe Orton’s Loot at the Criterion Theatre, which the previous year had won the Evening Standard Best Play award. I was 22 at the time. Jane Asher brought Paul McCartney to see Loot.

Just an irreverant Joe
Kenneth Cranham recalls John Tydeman, the man who made Joe Orton That fine actor Kenneth Cranham got in touch with the Old Un on the death of John Tydeman in April, aged 84. Tydeman, the head of BBC Radio Drama, was the man who made Joe Orton. ‘Tydeman was urbane, enthusiastic, warm and very well-connected,’ remembers Cranham, who first acted in Joe’s plays during Orton’s ‘sardine and boiled rice poverty’, as Cranham puts it.

Palach's Prague remembered
Fifty years ago, on the 19th January 1969, Jan Palach, a student of history and political economy at Charles University in Prague, burnt himself to death in protest after the end of the Prague Spring, resulting from the 1968 invasion. A few months later, I toured Europe with the English Stage Company, from the Royal Court Theatre, with two Edward Bond plays. I was cast as Len, the main character in Saved. Narrow Road to the Deep North, a play set in Japan, was the second production.
Harold was like Elvis crossed with Dickens
Tom Jones once said, ‘Elvis loved being Elvis.’ Well, Harold really liked being Harold. And, just like Elvis after his 1968 Comeback Special, Harold liked dressing with style. I remember him in 1988, when I was playing Aston in The Caretaker. Suited and booted in black, he wore a purple shirt and smoked a purple Sobranie cigarette with a glinting golden tip. There was something of the Saturday night out about Harold. He wore glasses, but Buddy Holly he wasn’t.
