A Pan-European Whole-Microbiome Study of Wastewater Influent: Prokaryotes, Protists, Fungi, and Metazoa
1 Introduction Large volumes of water are used daily across households, industry, and agriculture, making wastewater treatment essential for environmental sustainability (Rodríguez et al. 2015; Pan et al. 2018). Before treatment begins, untreated sewage integrates microorganisms from human, animal, household, industrial, and environmental sources.
Protistan Predators Outshine Fungi in Forest Soil Activity
1 Introduction Forests play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems, contributing significantly to global carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate regulation (Khadakkar 2022; Leal Filho et al. 2023; Liu et al. 2025). They are often referred to as the lungs of the Earth, providing essential ecosystem services such as water purification, soil stabilization, and habitat provision for a vast array of species.
Viral and eukaryotic drivers of prokaryotic and antibiotic resistance gene diversity in wastewater microbiomes
Background Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are proliferating in wastewater microbiomes, yet the biotic forces shaping their diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we integrate 14 months of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from a wastewater treatment plant to reveal that viruses and microeukaryotes, long-overlooked trophic actors, may play an important role in shaping bacterial and ARG diversity.
A Novel Protistan Trait Database Reveals Functional Redundancy and Complementarity in Terrestrial Protists (Amoebozoa and Rhizaria)
1 Introduction Refined information on the functional diversity of organisms, in addition to the traditional taxonomic framework, may greatly improve our knowledge of their function in ecosystem processes (Bouskill et al. 2012; Krause et al. 2014) but also, for example, how abiotic and biotic drivers shape communities (Briones 2014; Fiore-Donno et al. 2019).
A novel protistan trait database reveals functional redundancy and complementarity in terrestrial protists (Amoebozoa & Rhizaria)
Abstract The inclusion of functional traits of protists in environmental sequencing surveys, in addition to the traditional taxonomic framework, is essential for a better understanding of their roles and impacts on ecosystem processes.
Lotka-Volterra Dynamics Facilitate Sustainable Biocontrol of Wastewater Sludge Bulking
Abstract Biological wastewater treatment is driven by complex interactions between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Occasionally, filamentous bacteria species, first and foremost Ca. Microthrix parvicella, increase in abundance and lead to detrimental wastewater sludge bulking or floating, causing environmental harm and financial losses. Current mitigation strategies rely heavily on nonspecific chemical interventions, which present environmental risks and lack prolonged effectiveness.
Katarium polorum n. sp., n. g., a novel thecofilosean amoeba (Cercozoa, Rhizaria) from the polar oceans
INTRODUCTION Shell-bearing amoebae are globally distributed microorganisms, found across a wide range of habitats, where they play pivotal roles in nutrient cycling and microbial food webs by consumption of bacteria and other microeukaryotes. Shell-bearing amoebae have independently evolved in several eukaryotic lineages, including the phylum Cercozoa (Cavalier-Smith, 1998).

Legume rhizodeposition promotes nitrogen fixation by soil microbiota under crop diversification - Nature Communications
Abstract Biological nitrogen fixation by free-living bacteria and rhizobial symbiosis with legumes plays a key role in sustainable crop production. Here, we study how different crop combinations influence the interaction between peanut plants and their rhizosphere microbiota via metabolite deposition and functional responses of free-living and symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
Protistan predation selects for antibiotic resistance in soil bacterial communities - The ISME Journal
Abstract Understanding how antibiotic resistance emerges and evolves in natural habitats is critical for predicting and mitigating antibiotic resistance in the context of global change. Bacteria have evolved antibiotic production as a strategy to fight competitors, predators and other stressors, but how predation pressure of their most important consumers (i.e., protists) affects soil antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) profiles is still poorly understood.
