Kent Strunk’s Biography

Kent Strunk is an attorney and seasoned trial lawyer with more than 25 years of legal experience. Throughout this time, he has dedicated himself to criminal defense work, building a reputation grounded in consistent effort, responsible case handling, and careful preparation. His many years in the courtroom have shaped a professional path marked by commitment, experience, and a steady approach to advocacy.

He earned his law degree from the Northern Illinois College of Law in 1998 and entered the legal field with a clear focus on criminal defense. From the beginning, he showed interest in trial practice and sought opportunities to develop the skills needed for strong courtroom representation. This early direction guided his legal career and enabled him to build a foundation rooted in practical experience and steady growth.

Kent's career includes trying more than 100 felony jury trials, reflecting decades of work across a wide range of criminal matters. Among these cases were two high-profile murder trials that required careful preparation and sustained attention to detail. His level of trial involvement led to recognition from the Minnesota Public Defenders Office, which noted that he had the highest number of jury trials in the 9th Judicial District for three consecutive years. This acknowledgment represented the extent of his trial experience rather than a pursuit of numerical milestones.

Even with these accomplishments, his focus has remained on providing thorough representation grounded in deliberate strategy and detailed analysis. He approaches each case with preparation and measured decision-making, aiming to serve clients with clarity and fairness. Over time, these qualities have helped him build a respected standing in Minnesota’s legal community, where he is known for his steady demeanor and thoughtful approach to challenging legal issues.

Strunk's experience in criminal defense has continued to develop throughout his career. He has remained attentive to the demands of trial work, including the careful examination of evidence, evaluation of legal options, and preparation for unpredictable courtroom developments. His commitment to responsible representation reflects the values that have guided him throughout his legal journey.

Beyond legal practice, he has taken on work that extends his skills into research and community involvement. His professional background includes participation in national research efforts and long-term engagement with organizations focused on public service and community support.

From March 2022 to July 2024, Kent Strunk worked with the National Opinion Research Center in Chicago, Illinois. During this time, he contributed to major national surveys, including the Consumer Finance Survey and the Early Childcare and Education Survey. His role involved conducting field interviews, gathering accurate data, and helping ensure that the collected information reflected objective, nonpartisan findings.

These responsibilities required strong communication skills, consistent organization, and an ability to interact with individuals from varied backgrounds. He considers this period an essential part of his wider career because it allowed him to participate in projects that inform national programs and policy decisions. His research work broadened his professional experience and strengthened abilities that complement his legal practice, including attention to detail and skillful interaction with diverse communities.

His interest in community service has been long-standing. He has supported the United Way for several years, including service as a disbursement judge. He has also been a donor and supporter of the Boys and Girls Club. His involvement in these organizations reflects his commitment to supporting programs that help families and young people.

In addition to structured volunteer work, Kent has participated in mentoring and community activities during times of increased need. These efforts demonstrate his belief in contributing wherever his time and abilities can be helpful. His volunteer involvement mirrors the values shown in his legal and research efforts—consistency, responsibility, and service.

Throughout his career, family life has remained central to his identity and personal priorities. He married on September 15, 2000, and he and his spouse have four children. Their first child was born in 2001, followed by their second in 2003, and twins in 2006.

Their first child appeared in the Minnesota book Faces of Hope, which featured babies born on that date. This child later graduated from the University of Minnesota and is now pursuing graduate studies. Their second child earned a degree in Archaeology from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and plans to attend graduate school at the University of Minnesota. The twins are also students at the University of Minnesota. One is studying management, while the other participates in theater and recently played a leading role in a school production.

Strunk has been the primary caregiver for the children, participating consistently in their daily routines, education, and extracurricular activities. His involvement has been a defining part of his personal life. A well-loved family tradition is attending at least one Minnesota Twins game each year with every child. This tradition has remained in place since each child’s birth and continues to be a meaningful way for the family to spend time together while supporting Minnesota athletics.

His personal interests center on family, community involvement, and maintaining the traditions that matter to him. Over more than 25 years in the legal field, he has balanced professional responsibilities with a steady commitment to the people and communities around him. His experiences in law, research, and volunteer work demonstrate adaptability and dedication across different settings.

His career reflects a commitment to meaningful work and a desire to contribute in ways that support others. Whether preparing for a courtroom trial, conducting field interviews for national surveys, or participating in community programs, he brings the same thoughtful and grounded approach. His ability to maintain balance across these areas demonstrates his dedication to a steady, responsible way of living and working.

Today, Kent Strunk continues to reside in Minnesota, remaining actively involved in family life, community efforts, and the traditions that shape his daily routine. He shares his home with a yellow Labrador named Annie, reflecting the grounded lifestyle that has guided him throughout his long career.
