Currently, citizens from just about every country outside of China will need a visa to enter the mainland. Current exceptions are some Singapore, Brunei and Japan. Your passport will get you to the country of your destination but it's the visa which gives permission at the borders and customs for you to go in. Your Chinese visa is the magic key which opens the doors.
Most students do not really think much of their statement of purpose. However, it is one of the most important, if not the most important component of your visa application. Your statement of purpose makes its way to the Immigration Office in your university town in Germany, where it is assessed. They then decide based on the information you have provided whether you will be of benefit both to Germany and your home country.
