Innamorata is Ava Reid’s most off-putting book. Good.
In 2026, it can be hard to write a book that truly unsettles me. Conversely, as publishers stick closer to books that appease the mysterious Booktok algorithm and strike gold on whatever the trend of the month is, books that take huge risks rarely make their way into my orbit. And it’s both of these things I want from books that label themselves as dark fantasy, but rarely do I get what’s advertised.
Jackie Robinson, Paul Robeson, and White Supremacy
Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson. Both are titans in their respective industries, one the first Black man to play Major League Baseball, the other a highly respected stage and screen actor, singer, and director who travelled around the globe to entertain the masses. Both genuinely famous and remarkable people, who managed to fight against racial segregation to become recognized and accomplished trailblazers in their fields, literally and figuratively.
Posthumous Plumly: A Review
Lifting a collected poems is a satisfying exercise in promise, but one can feel weakened by its heft and queasy at the expectations of the reading challenge. There’s the chronology to consider; titles to remember; the separate poems in separate books; and the poems misremembered in one book actually rediscovered in a different book. And then, for me, there are the original books, cherished, recommended, and worn, well before the idea of a collected was a passing thought of a mid-career poet.
Baseball Obituary Ending with a Car Trip to Lakeland
By Kevin T. Cantwell There was that day Prime had his run-in with Carlton Fisk, granite face of New England, calling a frame against New York. We didn’t know until later what was said, but Pudge allowed Deion Sanders didn’t run out a fly ball, that growing up everyone looked up to the Pinstripes of that old Bronx lineup. This colloquy went on the entire game, some said his career in baseball. Run, you piece of shit, something like that said to the two-sport star.
Bethesda Pool - Belt Magazine
By Kevin T. Cantwell I tell people who are film and book people about the duration of time in The Best Years of Our Lives, which made my ex and our late friend Penelope cry when it ended. Poem | Old Miami
Levine used to say if you remember one of his readings that Donald Justice had never seen a worker, and Justice who had practiced his childhood piano on one of Miami’s old streets could recall a sunburned man with a bucket of masonry trowels who had walked by the porch window of his piano teacher one summer at the end of a lesson hour, his red hair stiffened by mortar.
