Concentrating affordable housing in Louisville’s West End continues geography of injustice Original
Among William Faulkner’s most quoted lines is his famous dictum, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” But it is the following sentence from that passage, elaborating on that idea that human outcomes are bound by long and broad chains of causality, which I find so riveting and germane in view of a discussion of our city’s ongoing social challenges.
HBCUs are imperative to Black progress. Financial support from liberal allies is needed. Original
There is a definite disconnect between liberal and progressive allies’ stated support for Black institutions and where they commit their resources to help us achieve that. Kevin W. Cosby Opinion Contributor Presidents of Historically Black Colleges and Universities have always known that our institutional success depends far less on our allies’ exercises in anti-racist rhetoric, and much more on their exercises in anti-racist resource sharing.
JCPS repeats history with another bad busing decision, affecting Black families. Original
Black folk have gone, in effect, from the back of the bus to the lack of a bus. Kevin W. Cosby Opinion Contributor Forty years ago, three local Black pastors appeared on the front page of The Courier Journal to denounce two patently racist transportation-related decisions by the Jefferson County School Board. The first: A modification of its busing plan whereby the majority of Black students from West Louisville would be forcibly bused to the county’s suburban schools.

Opinion: Voting rights restored to 140,000 Kentuckians. That's good news at Christmastime
OPINION Kevin W. Cosby and Joe Phelps, Opinion contributors Published 7:11 a.m. ET Dec. 20, 2019 It’s Christmastime. Families are decorating trees and wrapping gifts, and there’s joy in the air. We’re reflecting with those we love about the things that really matter in life: faith, family and community. In this spirit, restoring the voting rights of more than 140,000 Kentuckians is a great Christmas present. Thank you, Gov.
Kevin Cosby: Joe Gerth's reparations column is contemporary white supremacist propaganda
Kevin Cosby, Opinion contributor Published 2:08 p.m. ET June 28, 2019 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected reparations for slavery in part because it would be hard to know whom to pay. Time Before the days of refrigeration, fishermen in Labrador, Canada, would keep their catch from the Atlantic Ocean alive and fresh for market by placing a horny-headed catfish in the holding pen with the fish. The presence of this predator kept the fish fresh, alert and active.

June 5, 2018 Mandy McLaren/Courier Journal Jefferson County Public Schools is a billion dollar enterprise tasked with educating more than 100,000 students at 160 different sites.
Kevin Cosby: Police treated me like a criminal during traffic stop
Imagine contracting a buzzard as a real estate speculator to give you an assessment on a piece of property you are interested in purchasing. The buzzard flies over the property, does an investigation, and submits a report on the property. The report contains only one sentence: “The property in question has a lot of dead rabbits.” You pass on buying the property based on the report and someone else buys the land.
Louisville can't prosper if Jefferson County Public Schools can't improve, and that can't happen without reform
The state education commissioner will soon release the audit of Jefferson County Public Schools and provide Louisville with the most comprehensive examination of our school district yet. When released, the results will help us understand the challenges that face JCPS and how we can ensure our district better serves all students.
Powerful Louisville group explains why the state should reboot the school district
The state education commissioner will soon release the audit of JCPS and provide Louisville with the most comprehensive examination of our school district yet. When released, the results will help us understand the challenges that face JCPS and how we can ensure our district better serves all students. In the meantime, the audit has already sparked one significant outcome — our community is talking about the importance of high quality public education, a conversation that is long overdue.
Bevin doesn't RSVP to invitation to talk | Comment
This letter from the leadership of EmpowerWest, a city-wide organization of pastors dedicated to empowering Louisville's West End, was sent to Gov. Matt Bevin on June 15, following the governor's video messages. There has been no response. On behalf of the members of EmpowerWest, we thank you for your recent visit to West Louisville, and for sharing your thoughts as to how all of us might work together to address the outbreak of gun violence that has taken far too many lives in our city.
Louisville doesn't even know what it has stolen from blacks | Kevin Cosby
Just as Christ was used to justify slavery and Jim Crow, Gov. Bevin put Christ on the side of anti-government intervention. Rev. Agenda in labeling schools 'failed' | Comment
As pastors in Louisville we cannot remain silent while Gov. Matt Bevin uses our Jefferson County Public Schools and its teachers as a punching bag in his warm-up for the big match. On a radio show last week Gov. Bevin stated, "JCPS is a disaster in terms of the educational results. They have more failing schools than the entire rest of the state combined.
West Louisville needs some wins | Kevin W. Cosby
How ironic that at one end of Louisville’s Broadway is a lush green park that is often bustling with human activity, and on the opposite end is a lush green cemetery that is serene is its quiescence. As a pastor, the reality of both a park and a cemetery on opposite ends of the same street is great preaching fodder. These two extremes of life’s continuum collided in West Louisville on Thanksgiving Day.
What would Harriet do? Work for justice for all, pastors say
The Treasury Department announced last week that the image of Harriet Tubman would replace morally compromised Andrew Jackson. That Tubman is the first African-American and the first woman to be honored on our paper currency is cause for celebration. Similarly, the decision by the Louisville mayor and the University of Louisville president to remove the Confederate monument from a median that runs through campus is also a positive symbol of our local desire to heal old wounds.
Black History Month and a citywide book club
In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need Black History Month. Ideally, black history, like white history or Hispanic history, would be part of a single, shared narrative of our land. The highs and lows of each race would be woven together into a tapestry of truthful telling in which each group could recognize its particular place in the story.
