Churches Serving Churches
Over nine days in July, a group of 14 volunteers from Almond Valley Christian Reformed Church in Ripon, Calif., caravanned 900 miles to a Navajo reservation in New Mexico to help a fellow CRC in need. The group blessed Crownpoint CRC by fixing windows, renovating a bathroom, and restoring water to the church parsonage. Volunteers also installed a new sound system in the church building and hosted a vacation Bible school for children in the community.
Borderline of Hope and Heartbreak
An intergenerational group of 14 people representing different churches, most from the West Michigan area, spent their 2023 spring break in Texas—not on a relaxing beach but on the grim border between the United States and Mexico. They wanted to learn more about immigration and the circumstances that bring people to this border. Through the experience, they caught glimpses of hope in this area of conflict and controversy.
A Shared Celebration
Members of Ladner Christian Reformed Church in Delta, B.C., were privileged to witness the baptisms of seven new Chinese believers on a beautiful Sunday morning late last summer in a swimming pool at a local farm belonging to longtime Ladner members Martin and Ann Hamming. As each new Christian went into the swimming pool, Yang spoke to them in Mandarin, and then Truell baptized them.
Historical Tour Reboots for Racial Reconciliation
A group of 37 people representing congregations from California, Iowa, New Mexico, and parts of Canada traveled Oct. 19-25, 2022, to the southern United States to explore racial reconciliation by visiting key sites in American civil rights history. The trip, called Sankofa, was sponsored by World Renew and supported by the office of Race Relations of the Christian Reformed Church. It paired Black Americans with non-Black travelers to learn and talk about racial injustice in community.
$50K Pledge for Race Relations Scholarships
In honor of 50 years of racial reconciliation within the Christian Reformed Church in North America, an anonymous donor has pledged to match all donations to Race Relations up to $50,000. This is the largest gift ever promised to Race Relations in its 50 year history, and it will be applied to the All Nations Heritage (ANH) scholarship fund.
Race Relations Marks Black History Month
In 1926, Black historian Carter Woodson sent out a press release marking the first Black History Week in the United States. Fifty years later the commemoration was officially recognized when President Gerald Ford encouraged citizens to use the month of February to learn about and celebrate the long-neglected accomplishments and contributions of Black Americans.
Virtual Pulpit Supply
Even before COVID-19, the Worship Ministries of the Christian Reformed Church identified a need for a library of video sermons for use in churches with pastoral vacancies, especially those that are geographically distant from other CRC congregations, which can make finding pulpit supply difficult. However, during the restrictive months of the pandemic, with congregations being forced to adapt and go virtual, a new use for the videos became apparent: rest for pastors.
