Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started out as a simple Penn State football reporter for Examiner.com and have grown along the way.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, I have not. But I have seen them in operation in my home when younger.

How is social media changing news?

Thanks to social media news breaks and spreads faster than ever before. Just how much more can it go?

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Kent Brockman, anchor of the local news program on The Simpsons.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means relaying dependable information to the masses. Leave the opinions for the columnists.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#NBCFail made for some laughs during the most recent Olympics coverage.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is generally preferable, especially if we have not met before.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My laptop has Tweetdeck and Feedly open all day long, and my iPhone makes for quick photo and video sharing.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter; It allows me to quickly share my thoughts and exchange commentary with like-minded individuals, readers and beyond.

Who do you wish followed you?

Jay Bilas, of ESPN. The man follows nobody, so getting him to follow me would be considered the greatest honor.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to get involved with sports and was not nearly athletic enough to be on the field. Covering it was the next best thing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not, largely due to conflicting band schedules. I did, however, chip in with some miscellaneous yearbook production.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

In 2012 I got to cover the College Rugby 7's championships, giving me insight in to a new sport outside my norm. Great experience.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep grinding and cover what you are most interested in. In time, your efforts will be noticed, respected and pay off.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I can be pitched any time of day, but during normal business hours is usually the most ideal time.

What's your favorite drink?

Coca-Cola
