CALIPER forges ahead with establishing pediatric reference standards on latest Roche chemistry/immunoassay system
Reference intervals play a vital role in interpreting laboratory test results, ensuring precise clinical diagnosis and decision-making. In children, the establishment of reliable reference intervals is particularly complex due to fluctuating biomarker levels throughout growth and development.

Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists Harmonized Pediatric Lipid Reporting Recommendations for Clinical Laboratories
Abstract Detecting dyslipidemia early is important because atherosclerosis originates in childhood and early treatment can improve outcomes. In 2022, CCS/CPCA published a Clinical Practice Update to detect, evaluate, and manage pediatric dyslipidemia. However, guidance on its translation into clinical laboratories is lacking.
Resveratrol intervention attenuates chylomicron secretion via repressing intestinal FXR-induced expression of scavenger receptor SR-B1 - Nature Communications
Abstract Two common features of dietary polyphenols have hampered our mechanistic understanding of their beneficial effects for decades: targeting multiple organs and extremely low bioavailability. We show here that resveratrol intervention (REV-I) in high-fat diet (HFD)-challenged male mice inhibits chylomicron secretion, associated with reduced expression of jejunal but not hepatic scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1).
Comprehensive pediatric reference intervals for 79 hematology markers in the CALIPER cohort of healthy children and adolescents using the Mindray BC‐6800Plus system
4 DISCUSSION The current study established age- and sex-specific RIs for 79 hematology parameters in the CALIPER cohort of healthy children and adolescents. These data contribute to our understanding of complex hematological adaptations in childhood and adolescence and expand upon the clinical utility of the CALIPER database to include the BC-6800Plus system and additional research parameters (www.caliperdatabase.org).

Important considerations for interpreting biochemical tests in children
Rapid growth and development during childhood and adolescence pose challenges to paediatric healthcare, including blood test interpretation.1 Physicians may order blood tests in children and adolescents with signs and symptoms suggestive of a health condition. Blood tests can be used for screening, risk assessment, disease diagnosis or prognosis, and treatment initiation or monitoring (box 1).
Fructose, insulin resistance, and metabolic dyslipidemia
Fructose is readily absorbed and rapidly metabolized by human liver. For thousands of years humans consumed fructose amounting to 16–20 grams per day, largely from fresh fruits. Westernization of diets has resulted in significant increases in added fructose, leading to typical daily consumptions amounting to 85–100 grams of fructose per day.
