Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
To cover a visit by a scientist working to bolster Human immunity in 2011.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, but as a child.
How is social media changing news?
It encourages wilder stories instead of meaningful ones. But it also helps citizens be journalists too.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Tintin
What does it mean to be a journalist?
A couple things: to deploy empathy and understanding to all sides of a story and to discern what the story is. Then to make it matter.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email ideally. So I can determine if the brief is a good fit before we engage.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Apple MacBook Pro is a must. As is an external monitor (save your neck!) Pages, Otter.ai, Grammarly and iPhones help too.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter
Who do you wish followed you?
Gary Vaynerchuk. My love of journalism is evenly matched with my love of digital media as a platform.
Why did you become a journalist?
In 2011 when I was approached to interview a scientist researching specialised egg supplements designed to increase immunity.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was Editor in Chief and then created my own magazine brand at University.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My first. I had no idea how to take notes so I scribbled in large font and used a whole notebook during a photoshoot. And still got it.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Start now. Interview friends, family or someone you admire. Hone your skills and find courses and communities around writing.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime really. But I enjoy mid afternoons for calls. Mornings are for writing.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
To interview Shah Rukh Khan - never got to. Another journalist snapped it up. But one day!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Usually from business people who just want to be featured because they exist. And not because they solve a challenge.
What's your favorite drink?
Johnnie + Ginger Ale on occasion.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading one of several books that are usually a 3:1 ratio of health, mindset, yoga and spirituality books for every fiction novel.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love Vanity Fair features for the writing and the New York Times and UK Observer for the breadth of stories.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That's it's 'soft' news. Telling stories of people's success and struggles is a calling as old as civilisation itself.
