Selling An Idle Aircraft and Rebuilding An Airline – Keeping the Facts In View
Recently, much has been said about Air Vanuatu’s decision to sell off its “weather-beaten” Britten Norman Islander aircraft, with much of the criticisms directed at Board Chairman Robin Deamer and the management. Some of it was fair. Some of it was quite unfair, to say the least. Nevertheless, all of it is useful if we take it as an opportunity to grow and to put the facts on the table. In Vanuatu, we live in small communities where almost everyone is connected.

Vanuatu can go further in this OFC Nations Cup
Having watched the replay between Solomon Islands and Vanuatu I must say that, that was a great game of football we have seen in many years. Had we converted all our chances, it would have been a completely different story. I did predict earlier we have a chance if we play to our strengths. However, for the first time – thanks to a strong backline, we saw a game that was less nerve wracking – composed and controlled.
Unbridled ‘Stability’ Just as Bad for Democracy
A Constitutional petition is in the works by the ‘no’ vote campaigners as the countdown to the May 29 plebiscite begins. It’s the most sensible thing to do under current circumstances, where it appears there are so much misinformation and disinformation being shared around, and people – mostly within certain sections of the urban communities are getting caught in the middle – perplexed about which way to cast their votes.
It’s time to stem the tide on political one-upmanship
All media platforms are currently hotbeds of debate over the national referendum regarding two significant amendments to the national constitution. The vote scheduled for May 29th 2024, is the first in the country’s 43-year history and the changes to the constitution aim to address one of the country’s longstanding concerns – political instability. The national vote will be on two seemingly very innocuous changes to the constitution.
Proposed integrity law needs a bit more work
It seems everyone is jumping on the political integrity bill bandwagon as the solution for the current curse affecting the national politics which has caused so much fluidity in the political landscape. If this sounds pedantic, or worse didactic, the writer offers his sincere apologies. In looking up the word ‘integrity’ thanks to Google, the following definition popped up: ‘the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you refuse to change’.
How Kalsakau’s government in Vanuatu fell
In November 2022 I wrote an article predicting that Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau’s reign was not guaranteed to last and that his government’s longevity would depend very much on how well he managed the interests of his eight coalition partners in government. This is a follow-up to that piece. First, it is probably fair to say that Kalsakau’s government exceeded most people’s expectations.

Samoans were traditional plant-eaters
We at METI are reminded every day of a famous statement made by the German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, who more than two centuries ago said: “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed.
The 10 food groups in Samoa to maintain health
We have made mentioned in earlier columns that our bodies make the best use of the foods we eat earlier in the day so there is this slogan: ‘at breakfast, eat like a King or Queen; at lunch, eat like a Prince or Princess and in the evening… eat like a Pauper!’ And again ideally, your last meal should be consumed by around 6 pm so that the food is digested by the time you go to bed and won’t interfere with your sleep.
Five easy exercises to do at your desk
Talofa Samoa and welcome back to your weekly Physiotherapy column. Today’s column is written by Katie Bell l, a physiotherapist in Australia, and it gives you tips and tricks to use at your work desk. General aches and pains have become increasingly more common over the past 18 months due to a reduction of activity during the various lockdowns, and many people having to work from home in less-than-ideal, non-ergonomic environments.
Join the global call of 'health for all'
Every two minutes, a woman dies giving birth. As the clock counts down another year, 287,000 more women will meet the same tragic fate. Most of these deaths are preventable. They are not inevitable. They happen because healthcare systems routinely fail women and girls. Women die giving birth because, for too many, health services are unavailable, inaccessible, unaffordable, or offer poor quality care. Women seeking contraception face similar barriers.
Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau’s opportunity to write his own story
Newly elected Vanuatu Prime Minister Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau Ma’aukoro of the Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) may have been elected unopposed last Friday, 4 November 2022, but that does not guarantee him success, unless he can maintain the support of all his coalition partners. His government enjoys a 30-member majority, following the recent snap elections of 13 October 2022 – just 18 months short of the scheduled 2024 polls.

Benefits of Stability
Situated on the breezy side of the Joint-Court area, this property has been the official residence of Prime Ministers of Vanuatu since the early 1990s. At least this was so for sometimes immediately after the end of one-party rule in 1991. Not anymore these days. At a recent visit, the residence was being occupied by a political advisor in the prime minister’s cabinet.
