What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance reporting 1st Palestinian uprising, then covering Capitol Hill battle to reform utility regulation, which led to the Enron debacle.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! Mom made me learn in high school, on the old electric type. I have thanked her ever since.
How is social media changing news?
Increasing the reach of accurate news, and disinformation.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Ford Prefect
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Always learning–questioning carefully, listening closely to ALL sides, to tell the story from 360 degrees. And fighting fiercely to tell it.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Please send a short, fact-filled pitch that shows how this author/expert could highlight/explain trending stories/break news.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
ProtonMail.com & Proton VPN; Signal, Olvid & sometimes SilentPhone; Slack; WordPress; LinkedIn
What's your favorite social network?
The coffee shop! Failing that, Twitter is a good work tool, but nothing beats meeting in person.
Who do you wish followed you?
People from the entire political spectrum, to learn about foreign policy/natsec issues I tweet about from a nonpartisan viewpoint.
Why did you become a journalist?
To speak for those who can't, & to be there to witness, & report the first draft of history.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We didn't have one, but I was Wellesley College WZLY Radio News Director, & crafted newscasts from local newspapers & campus events.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
How ISIS sent its Yezidi child soldiers back home to serve as "sleepers"–telling them ISIS would rise again, leaving them ever fearful
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
When someone tells you no, look for the critique within their answer, fix the problem, and run at them/the story/the project again.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Really, pitches often eat up precious time, especially mass-marketed pitches that have nothing to do with my highlighted areas of interest.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A short one from someone who had studied what I cover, mentioned a recent story I'd written, and spelled my name correctly.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The PR person linked to a story I'd written as the reason for writing me...without realizing I'd written it. #automailfail
What's your favorite drink?
Hand-rolled, organic Jasmine tea. Addicted.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
The garden. During COVID, I entirely transformed ours, planting East Coast natives to lure pollinators & fight climate change.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Just one? The WaPo, The NYTs, FP.com, & listening daily to BBC World Service, NPR & the WSJ news podcasts. And smart syfy like Peter Singer.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That we come at it from a personal political point of view, or that most of our subjects do. National security is still mostly nonpartisan.
