What was your first job as a journalist?
High school newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I learned to type on a typewriter in high school. I guess that shows my age. There was no autocorrect of spell-check.
How is social media changing news?
It's the 24-hour cable news cycle on steroids. I mean look at the Arab spring and numerous other examples of viral tweets and posts.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I don't have one.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Hard work.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Can't think of any
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I take pitches from someone who has actually done some research I get too many lazy pitches saying they love my work. They have no clue.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I'm an Apple guy. I have a Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone. Everything connects and is mostly pretty simple. Remember what my wife said? Yeah!

Who do you wish followed you?
No one comes to mind.
Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to bring my voice to the conversation.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Not much. It was for extra credit. haha.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I told our story about dealing with our son's heroin addiction on my blog. It was a hard story to tell. It's helped so many people.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Work hard, write continuously, don't get discouraged. Writing is a grind. Stay with it. Too many quit too soon.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Um. Never. I don't need to be pitched.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Still waiting.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
It's the salespeople saying they were doing work for one of my neighbors and wanted to include me. The problem? couldn't name them.
What's your favorite drink?
Cabernet Sauvignon.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
My wife would tell you I'm never off my computer. She has a point sometimes. We love doing yoga or hanging out with our 2 Akitas.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I love the Morning Brew newsletter. It's witty, clever, and covers a lot of financial and other news. I love starting my day with it.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Interesting question. I have no idea what my beat is. So I don't know any misperceptions.
