Southern Baptists minister to Music City Center workers during annual meeting
NASHVILLE (BP) – As Southern Baptists from across the country gathered for the annual meeting last week, many were intentional about sharing the love of Jesus with the staff at the Music City Center. Because of the size of the event, the Music City Center hired additional contract workers to assist during the week of the meeting. One temporary worker, a young woman, accepted Christ as Savior through the ministry of the worship team from Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tenn.
After SBC resolution, anti-Hyde effort still continues
WASHINGTON (BP) – The Democratic Party’s effort to provide federal funds for abortion has continued a week after Southern Baptists spoke with unity against such a development. The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives blocked consideration Wednesday (June 23) of legislation that would establish a permanent, government-wide ban on money for abortions.
Christians understand costly realities of following Jesus
Editor’s note: This story is part of a series on global persecution, leading churches to pray for the persecuted church. Ramsey* didn’t want to take his own life. Instead, he accepted missions that put him in harm’s way. Years later, after he became a Christian, Ramsey still doesn’t want to take his own life, but is willing to lay down his life for the sake of Christ and accepted a mission that puts him in harm’s way. Being in harm’s way means loving those who were once his enemies.

FIRST-PERSON: A few highlights from 2021 SBC Annual Meeting
NASHVILLE (BP) – While the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting is now part of our history, let’s not forget a few of the great highlights. We each will remember some things personally and we will discover others as we dialogue with friends. I want to share a few special highlights I believe are worthy of mention. Serving with Integrity and Skill: O. S. Hawkins Reflects on a Half-Century of Ministry
On a clear day from O. S. Hawkins’s office in a North Dallas high-rise, you can see all the way to Fort Worth, his hometown. It may be fewer than forty miles from Crenshaw Street on Fort Worth’s East Side, where Hawkins grew up, to GuideStone’s offices. But in many ways, it’s a world away and part of the culmination of a journey the Lord Himself orchestrated. Raised in a moral, but not church-going, home, Hawkins’s parents were married a long time before he was born.
Largest SBC gathering in 25 years spurred by first-time messengers, geographical proximity to Nashville
NASHVILLE (BP) – Last week’s 2021 SBC Annual Meeting was the largest since 1995, and much of that had to do with the location and the involvement of first-time messengers to the convention. A survey conducted of those in attendance showed that nearly 80 percent of messengers drove to the June 15-16 meeting in Nashville.
Worship sets the tone at SBC meeting
NASHVILLE (BP) – On June 15-16, the Southern Baptist Convention gathered for business proceedings and voting sessions. But before the meetings could begin, attendees refocused their hearts on a greater purpose, Jesus Christ, through a time of worship. The SBC annual meeting is about more than business. Messengers come to worship too.
Rice urges Southern Baptists to build on what lasts
NASHVILLE (BP) – Florida pastor Willy Rice gave Southern Baptists somewhat of an investment pitch Wednesday (June 16). Go for gold, silver and precious jewels, he said, not the wood, hay and straw that has its short-term advantages but little benefit in terms of longevity. Rice, senior pastor of Calvary Church in Clearwater, Fla., delivered the convention sermon for the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting based on 1 Corinthians 3:3-17.

Southern Baptist evangelists focus on family with Huckabee, Penrod
NASHVILLE (BP) – As a musician since the age of 11, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told Southern Baptist evangelists he knows the first thing he has to do when he picks up an instrument is to tune it so each note sounds like it should. Huckabee was the guest June 13 of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists (COSBE) at that group’s annual Sunday worship service before the 2021 SBC Annual Meeting. The service took place at Hermitage Hills Baptist Church in a northeast Nashville suburb.

NASHVILLE (BP) – Preaching at Proclamation Church on Sunday (June 13), SBC President J.D.
