Editing Old Posts: A Tactic of Disinformation in the Midst of Amhara Conflict
The armed conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia has intensified in recent months. The immediate cause of the conflict was the Ethiopian government’s decision to dissolve regional special police forces. Since then, the Amhara region has been engulfed in conflict and violence, with regular clashes between government forces and the Fano militias. The conflict has claimed the lives of many civilians, and there have been reports of human rights abuses.

A Facebook page with more than 50 thousand followers published a post on Apr 11, 2023, claiming that a building was demolished and many civilians were injured as a result of heavy artillery fires by the Oromo Liberation Front [the Ethiopian National Defence Forces] in Bahir Dar, Amhara region. The post used two images to support the claim. The first image shows a heavily damaged edifice and the second shows a rising dark smoke.
False: Ambassador Misganu Arega is not appointed as Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister replacing Demeke Mokennen.
On Jan 11, 2023, a Facebook post emerged sharing the picture of Ambassador Mesganu Arega with a claim that he was appointed as Ethiopian Foreign Minister by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The post also stated that the new minister replaced the incumbent foreign minister Demeke Mokkonen. The Facebook page has over thirteen thousand followers and the post is highly likely to reach a wider audience. HaqCheck however confirmed that Ambassador Mesganu Arega was not appointed a foreign minister.

A viral video was shared across social media platforms, mainly Facebook and Twitter, with a claim that the video was of a recent interview with TPLF chairman, Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) about the peace agreement and he made good remarks on the deal and PM Abiy Ahmed (PhD). The video was shared many times. It was watched by over 41 thousand users on a particular Twitter post.
False: the images don’t show a design of a satellite town to be built in Addis Ababa.
A Facebook page with more than 38 thousand followers shared four images on Nov 18, 2022, claiming that the pictures are of a design of a satellite town to be built in Addis Ababa. The post also states that the satellite town (aka the Chaka Project) covers a large swath of land stretching from around Entoto to Tafo. The Facebook post was viral and was shared many times on the same platform.
Does the image show the American flag being burnt on the streets of Addis Ababa?
A Facebook page with over a hundred thousand followers shared a post on Oct 23, 2022, with the caption “American flag being burned in the streets of Addis Ababa.” However, HaqCheck examined the image and determined it to be False. It is roughly two years since fighting broke out in northern Ethiopia, Tigray. Since then different gatherings and public demonstrations have taken place against foreign interference.

Different Facebook posts shared the image across the platform. However, HaqCheck confirmed that the image of the front page of the newspaper was manipulated and given a fake story headline.

By the time this article was published the YouTube video had more than 77 thousand views with more than 200 reactions. However, HaqCheck has investigated the video footage and rated it as FALSE.
