"One Hell of a School": WASC Reports Glowing Evaluation of M-A Successes
This past week, students may have noticed new faces walking around on campus, observing classes, and talking to students and teachers. These officials are a part of WASC, or the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which visits high schools to ensure their educational accreditation-and students' high school diplomas-are still valid. This assessment, which takes place every six years, influences future classes, policies, and strategies for teachers and administration.
M-A Participates in California Student Mock Election
M-A participated in the California Student Mock Election this year, where students practiced exercising their right to vote in a representative election. Students received a Google Form link to vote for a presidential and senate candidate and a few state propositions. The mock election voting opened on Oct. 1 and closed on Oct. 8, and the official results were posted on Oct. 11.
Sabrina Carpenter’s New Album May Be Short, But it is Certainly Sweet
It’s been a huge year for Sabrina Carpenter. While she’s been putting out music for years, the release of single “Espresso” in April catapulted her into the public eye as millions jammed out to the upbeat and lighthearted tune that came to be dubbed by many as the song of the summer. Soon after, Carpenter released “Please Please Please,” which highlighted her gentle voice alongside the song’s breezy, country-esque melody.
Bear Bites: Starbucks Debuts New Summer Drinks
With summer right around the corner, Starbucks has introduced both a spicy take on their original three refresher flavors as well as a new flavor and topping altogether. Spicy and boba refreshers both seem like odd flavors, so we tried them to see if they were worth their money. The spicy new take on three popular fruity refreshers infuses their tasty fresh flavor with a three-pepper chili blend. It is an unconventional move for Starbucks, which rarely balances out its drinks’ sugar content.
This Year's Met Gala Looks Left Lots to be Desired
Unsurprisingly, this year’s biggest trend was florals, representing the garden. One of my favorite flowery looks from this year came from model Gigi Hadid who wore a stunning white Thom Brown gown with black lining and yellow flowers. Rapper Nicki Minaj also shone in a Marni mini dress which looked like a surrealist painting that had come to life, spotted with colorful 3D flowers. Some attendees had more creative interpretations of the dress code.
Students Share Funny Stories From the Working World
Outside of their busy class schedules and extracurriculars, many M-A students work as a way to earn extra money and gain experience. However, things don’t always go as planned on the job. Senior Kasey Prober works at Alys Grace, a boutique in downtown Menlo Park. “One day during the summer it was super busy and frantic in the store, and we were trying to get all of the clothes out of the fitting rooms quickly so we could put new people in,” she said.
Feminist Male Teachers Share Their Perspectives
“It wasn’t until college that I ever thought of identifying as a feminist because so much of the media uses feminism almost like a swear word,” English teacher Jason Hunt said. M-A is home to many male teachers who are proud to be feminists. English teacher David Rosenberg said, “I think being a feminist is supporting equal rights for women, point blank. Why wouldn’t you want to advocate for women’s rights?
Have students followed their new year's resolutions? - M-A Chronicle
Each new year brings the opportunity to set new goals. Whether it’s getting more exercise, eating healthier, or getting more sleep, New Year’s resolutions are meant for personal growth and improvement. Now that we’re over a month into 2024, let’s take a look at how well M-A students have kept their New Year’s resolutions. Some students are pursuing academic goals. Sophomore Yuma Mora said, “This year I want to be more focused on my priorities of earning good grades and keeping my A’s.

On January 10th and 11th, Challenge Day returned to M-A, this time for the juniors. Challenge Day is an all-day workshop where students partake in a variety of exercises meant to build community and acceptance.
Girls Basketball Narrowly Defeated by Los Altos
On Monday, the girls’ basketball team lost 42-45 against the Los Altos Eagles. The Eagles entered the game strong, scoring six consecutive points before junior Avary Sheldon hit an early three-pointer. The Bears were unable to continue the momentum and trailed the Eagles to end the first quarter 5-16. The second quarter began similarly with additional points from the Eagles.
Alcohol Usage at School Events Spikes
Is M-A cracking down on punishments for drinking? Recently, there has been more talk on campus about the usage of alcohol at school events following recent cases of students caught either in possession of alcohol or under the influence. Administrative Vice Principal (AVP) Nicholas Muys said, “We have noticed a spike in incidents.

Customers have already started to rave about the engaged customer service and contemporary ambiance. As one of three restaurants in the complex, Che Fico stands out.
How Did Students Spend Thanksgiving Break?
When the leaves start to turn brown and the aroma of pumpkin pie begins to fill the air, you know it’s time for Thanksgiving Break. During a week meant for relaxing and appreciating loved ones, here is how some Bears spent their time off! Some students traveled across the country to visit family. Junior Calvin Linnert said, “I went to Wisconsin to stay with extended family on my mom’s side. My mom and I also have a tradition of running a 5k Turkey Trot in a city called Wauwatosa.
Boys and Girls Cross-Country Dominate PAL Finals
On Saturday, both the boys and girls cross-country teams achieved outstanding success at the Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) Championship. M-A secured the victory with a score of 50 points, over 35 fewer than the runner up, Carlmont. Senior Tatum Olesen took first place for the girls, followed by fellow seniors Annie Pflaum in third, Sofia Melani in 13th, and Cleo Rehkopf* in 15th.
Teachers Got Talent
It can be hard to see our teachers as anything other than educators, but many of them are also masters of unique talents. From chefs and artists to marathon athletes, M-A is full of talented teachers. English teacher Lisa Otsuka is a skilled baker and chef with a wide repertoire. “I love to bake bread, but I also really love to make pastas and pies. I also like to make cream puffs and eclairs,” she said. Baking has brought Otsuka closer to her grandmother.
