Koang Chang’s Biography

Koang Pal Chang is a South Sudanese multimedia journalist with over 15+ years of experience in the Newsroom. In his professional career, he acquired good interviewing and research skills, analytical skills, sound editing, news reporting, writing and editing skills.

At his tender age, growing up as a refugee in Ethiopia in the 1980s, Koang was enrolled in government school in Ethiopia. After sitting for Ethiopian High School Leaving Examination in early 1991, Koang moved to Kenya following the overthrow of the Ethiopian government.

Koang first enrolled for a journalism course in Kenya Institute of Mass Communication in 1996 and completed his university education later in 2012. Koang is now holder of B.Sc. degree in Communication and Journalism from Moi University – Kenya. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in Human Rights Laws from University of Juba. Koang attended a number of media fellowships and training including Media Management training in Rhode University, South Africa, 2014.

Koang began to practice his journalism back in 2006. His first story was on human rights violations. Koang came across a sensitive news story in Nasir, in Upper Nile state, where a woman was allegedly buried alive for committing adultery. The story alarmed the region and the then government of Southern Sudan, after much pressure from human rights watch.

Throughout his fifteen-year journalism and media career, Koang have covered his country with a keen interest and passion, where he produced and managed the creation of stories and radio programs that explored current affairs, political, economic, social, culture, human rights issues and the conflict, the aftermath of peace, as well as the humanitarian and development journey in the Eastern Africa region that earned him an award of recognition from The East Africa Community Secretariat in Arusha, Tanzania 2017.

Koang is currently managing one of the successful media houses in the country – Eye Radio. The radio station is also one of institutions in the country offering practical journalism skills. Koang managed to collaborate with a number of media learning institutions in the country by offering mentorship to interns and journalism students undergoing training at Eye Radio newsroom in Juba.

As the manager of an award-winning radio station – Eye Radio - Koang oversees the work of over twenty journalists. Koang works closely with the CEO and senior managers in planning and implementing projects. He also coordinates outreach activities of the organization with relevant stakeholders.

As the head of the news and programming department, he chaired editorial meetings, prepared his work plans, and wrote weekly activities reports. Koang also manages Eye Radio’s social media page and website, writes news and features stories for publication on the web - https://eyeradio.org.

At a different capacity, Koang has served at various media positions in the country, including media consultant and training. Koang previously served as the Secretary of Association for Media Development in South Sudan that participated in drafting the first copy of media Law that culminated in the Media Authority Act 2013. He founded the National Editors’ Forum, where he served as its chairman that developed the first copy South Sudan’s Media Editorial Guidelines.

Koang also founded the first South Sudan private media training institute – Media Development Institute that has been training journalists since 2015, and served as its Board of Trustees. He also participated and engaged in a successful media advocacy campaign on human rights and free press in the country. In 2014, he attended the US – Africa Leadership conference as a media representative in Washington DC.

Koang speaks English, Arabic, Amharic and other three South Sudanese local languages. He is blessed with beautiful girls and handsome boys in his marriage.
