What was your first job as a journalist?
News anchor at KMST-TV (now KION-TV) in Monterey, California at the wee age of 17.
Have you ever used a typewriter?

How is social media changing news?
While giving everyone a voice, it has gutted the news, exponentially spreading hatred and misinformation.

What does it mean to be a journalist?
To shine a light on governmental and corporate wrongdoing to create positive change in the world.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
if you have an intriguing idea, send me an email, text, ir call. I focus on longer form enterprise reporting and personal essays.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Macbook, iPhone, data. I dig into PubMed for scientific research and look for literary references to for perspective and inspiration.
What's your favorite social network?

Who do you wish followed you?
I engage with VIPs and sources online if they are on social media -- many aren't. They can follow me or keep the relationship on the DL.
Why did you become a journalist?
So that I could have great adventures! (Seriously, that was the inciting impulse.)
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I graduated a year early from high school and supported myself as a working journalist shortly thereafter. (Have VW bug, will travel.)
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Too many to count. The Rolling Stone article led to offers to turn it into a movie . . .
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Walking my rescue corgi Hamlet or listening to my husband play the saxophone.
