Get Grounded in the New Year with Downward Facing Dog
Local yoga instructor Kristen Addicks highlights a fundamental pose to ground ourselves for January. After the whirl and swirl of the crazy holiday season, it is time to settle back down. Downward Facing Dog, Adho Mukha Svanasana (AH-doh MUK-ha Shvuh-NAH-suh-na), will help settle into the New Year. In this pose, the upper half of the body has an upward channel of energy that keeps us going. This helps us accomplish all the things we need to get done.
Build Strength and Balance with Sirsasana
Local yoga instructor Kristen Addicks introduces the ‘King of All Poses’ for December, which stimulates our crown chakra, changes our perspective, increases circulation and builds confidence. Letting go is a big part of the yoga practice. To be truly free, we must be willing to accept changes of all kinds and face our fears head on (no pun intended). When attempting this pose (and all inversions), we have to let go of the ground beneath our feet and open up to a totally new perspective.
Open the Front Body with our November Yoga Pose: Anjaneyasana
It is a big opener — including the area around the heart, helping us connect with gratitude. November Pose of the Month is Anjaneyasana (AHN-jah-nay-AH-suh-nuh). It is a big opener, opening the whole front of the torso, including the area around the heart. This helps us connect with gratitude. It also opens the hip flexor on one leg, while stretching the gluteal muscles and hamstring muscles on the other. A cornucopia of things are happening here.

October Yoga Pose of the Month
An Impressive Pose that takes Courage, Strength and Determination Bakasana(bahk-AHS-anna) Baka means ‘crane’ but here in the West, we call it Crow Pose. It seems like the perfect pose for the fall month of October. This pose takes strength and determination, yet, to be honest, it looks harder than it is. That’s what makes it a good ‘Party Pose.’ What’s that, you ask? You know, when you are at a party in Marin and after a couple cabernets, you start to do yoga.

September Yoga Pose Of The Month
The September Pose of the Month is my all-time favorite restorative pose — Reverse Savasana (sha-VAHS-ah-nah). Sava means Corpse. I chose this pose because during this transitional time of year I switch out of the high gear of trying to cram every possible kind of fun into my summer and move to a more slowed down, back-to-reality pace. It’s slightly sad, but I also hear the collective exhale of all of us parents as the kids go back to school.

Yoga Pose Of The Month
Flow easily into back-to-school month with August's yoga pose of the month. This month’s yoga pose is dedicated to Maty Ezraty, whose recent untimely death sent shockwaves and sadness throughout the worldwide yoga community. Even though I did not train directly under Ezraty, her influence flows through my practice and my teaching because of the indelible mark she left on modern yoga in the west, especially for teachers who trained at YogaWorks.
Get Playful with our July Yoga Pose: Pincha Mayrasana
Pincha Mayurasana (pin-cha my-your-AHS-anna) or Feathered Peacock Pose is an arm balance that can teach us a lot more about ourselves than arms strength. I attended two graduation ceremonies this summer and the focus of each commencement address was ‘failure.” When we try and fail, we learn valuable life lessons. In a world that seems to only celebrate success, it was a great message for our youth — don’t be afraid to fail.
Elbow Stand
This month’s yoga pose is not really a pose at all, but an inevitability that every yoga lover should embrace.
June Yoga Pose of the Month: Utthita Parsvakonasana
This month’s pose is Utthita Parsvakonasana (oo-TEE-tah PARZH-vuh-ko-NAHS-uh-nuh), also known as . It is a majestically beautiful pose, especially when done with precision. An untrained eye can easily tell when this pose is done correctly because it is so straight and purposeful. And yet, it is a pose that is not easy to master because so much is going on simultaneously.

Utthita Parsvakonasana (oo-TEE-tah PARZH-vuh-ko-NAHS-uh-nuh), also known as Extended Side Angle Pose is a majestically beautiful pose, especially when done with precision. An untrained eye can easily tell when this pose is done correctly because it is so straight and purposeful. And yet, it is a pose that is not easy to master because so much is going on simultaneously. The end result is forming a straight incline on the entire side of your body from the outer edge of your foot to your fingertips.

Stretch and Strengthen with the May Yoga Pose: Trikonasana
Trikonasana (tri-ko-NAH-se-na), Triangle Pose, is a common pose done in many yoga classes. This pose opens the hips, chest and shoulders, stretches inner thighs, hamstrings and organs, strengthens legs and neck, lengthens the spine and aids in digestion. It’s an obvious name for the pose as you are making the shape of a triangle.
Connect with Nature this April with this Yoga Pose of the Month: Tree Pose
At this time of the year, I feel the most connected to Earth and to nature. Maybe it’s because the days are getting longer and weather is warmer, or maybe it is because we celebrate Earth Day this month. Whatever the reason, a connection to Earth and all living things is an important part of the deeper meaning of yoga. The pose this month is Vrksasana (vrik-SHAHS-anna), or Tree Pose.

The Foundation of all Yoga Pose this March: Tadasana
The March Pose of the Month is Tadasana (Tah-DAH-sah-nah) or Mountain Pose. This is a foundational pose and, with spring upon us, it seems appropriate to start at the very beginning. It is also the first pose in Surya Namaskar (SUR-yah-NAM-ah-skar) — known as the Sun Salutation, which is a very traditional sequence performed in most yoga classes. Tadasana is the blue print for many poses in yoga.

Ring in the Holidays
The holidays liven our senses like no other season: the smell of cinnamon and pine needles, the taste of gingerbread and eggnog, the feel of cold air and warm mittens, and the sight of snowmen and ice skates. Here in Marin, we have several sophisticated musical groups who will share their talents throughout this season. Marin Symphony has been ushering in the holidays with a candlelit concert for nearly three decades.
