Rock the Top Guac
To rock the guac at home, you don't have to use a mortar and pestle made of volcanic rock, but it makes an impression. Some holidays are simply excuses to partake in certain yummy foods. Or at least that's the way it can seem. Cinco de Mayo is one of these – it's an excuse for a whole waterfront festival of not just foods but amusement park rides and music and fireworks. And lots of people. If waterfront wildness isn't your scene, though, just rock the guac at home.
Please Do Eat the (Kale) Flowers
Kale raab may look like spindly, wilted kale, but it's actually the tender flowering tops of overwintered kale. Don't let the name intimidate you: "raabs" – be they kale raab, broccoli raab, or any other kind of raab – are just flowers with a funny name. Raabs are the tender flowering tops of the bolted Brassica genus, i.e., the cabbage family. But more important, these are flowers you can, and should, eat. You'll be glad you did.

Portland, Brooklyn, and the 1890s
Isn't it a little loco when localism goes global? Loco, as in: makes no sense at all? The ultimate oxymoron? Take "Brooklynization." Supposedly, Brooklyn is being imported to Paris, Nashville, Los Angeles, Stockholm, and Berlin, among other world cities – even to Portland. Yes, Portland is being Brooklynized – i.e. filled with young people wearing chunky eyeglasses, plaid shirts, big beards (for the men among them), and pickling everything they can get their hands on.
Skip the Store-Bought and Make Homemade Peeps for Easter This Year
Whether or not you celebrate Easter, you’ve probably noticed it’s become an excuse for commercial displays of loads of pastel colors and an overflow of chocolate and other sugary treats. And who’s to say those aren’t welcome an a rainy Spring Sunday – or any day, really. Whatever your plans this year, you might be inspired to DIY something you’ve never done before.
Best Ever Cookies
For many of us, Christmas brings out a craving for classics, an instinct to adhere to traditions. Baking cookies is no exception. Trying new recipes is fun, but in perhaps a majority of American households, there’s got to be time for whipping up some chocolate chip cookies. What could be more classic than toll house cookies and the recipe taken from the back of the crinkly package of Nestle Toll House morsels?
