T-45 to Depart the Pattern
The Navy’s venerable T-45 Goshawk first flew in 1988 and has been in service since the early 1990s. The aircraft on which it is based—the BAE Hawk trainer—has been in service since the early 1970s. The Goshawk was originally manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, but Boeing took over when the two companies merged in 1997.
Dinner Is Served
It is no secret that the Navy is religious about adhering to mealtimes. And not just special meals, such as a holiday feast. In fact, the “Thanksgiving” menu is served at least once during the 30-day cycle, sometimes twice, and, if you’re lucky, with both ham and turkey. Perhaps this adherence is because on a submarine or a ship, the day is structured around the watches and thus the pre-watch and post-watch meals. Perhaps it is because mealtimes break up the monotony of a long deployment.

Interdicting Narcotics at Sea: The Coast Guard’s Counterdrug Mission Is a Team Effort.
Hundreds of miles from U.S. shores, Coast Guard cutters are patrolling the Caribbean Sea as part of the service’s counterdrug mission. While stateside law enforcement seizures have more visibility, stopping bulk loads of cocaine before they reach the United States can be more effective at slowing the flow of illicit drugs. In 2024, Customs and Border Patrol seized 28.4 metric tons (MT) of cocaine; the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted 106.3 MT.

It Is Time to Move the Coast Guard to DoD
Most arguments for moving the Coast Guard to the Department of Defense (DoD) have centered on operational, budgetary, or cultural debates; however, the most compelling reason might be to better serve the needs of Coast Guardsmen and their families. As members of the only armed force not part of DoD, they are not always afforded the same support services and programs as offered by the much-larger Defense Department.
