The secret to AI isn’t creativity, it’s reducing toil
Take our IT team. They receive over 5,000 employee inquiries every quarter. But their toil isn’t the volume of inquiries, it’s the time spent answering the same questions. They needed a solution that improved the inquiry experience, without changing the flow employees are accustomed to. In partnership with Moveworks, we built Octobot, a Slack-integrated tool trained on our unique policies and documentation. It can also be reactive, hopping in as a first line of support for an issue that pops up.
The secret to AI isn’t creativity, it’s reducing toil
As companies worldwide seek to stay competitive, many are turning to AI to improve their businesses. While AI-assisted programming has been a successful early use case, the rollout for non-developer teams has been slow, with businesses lacking a clear roadmap for sourcing, testing, and scaling AI tools. Too much time is being spent adding chat boxes and summaries without creating meaningful change for employees. There’s a different path we can choose.
Good DevEx increases productivity. Here is the data.
The wait is over: we finally have data to back up the benefits of developer experience (DevEx). We’ve always known that providing a good DevEx is a smart business move, as it enables developers to solve complex tasks, collaborate with peers, and unleash their creativity. We hear this from customers all the time. But despite the benefits, DevEx conversations usually end when execs ask for hard data on what their business will gain by improving it.

How to get in the flow while coding (and why it’s important)
It’s the dream: your ideas are flowing, time and space fade away, the path ahead of you is clear, you’re moving at the speed of thought, and every click you make is gold. This is called being in the flow or flow state. When you’re in the flow, you block out the world, are fully immersed in what you’re doing, and enjoy . “Being in the flow is magical,” says Jonathan Carter, technical advisor of the CEO at GitHub.

Securing our home labs: Home Assistant code review
Introduction In July, the GitHub Security Lab team conducted a collaborative review of one of our favorite software pieces. While it’s not uncommon for our Security Lab researchers to work together on audits and research projects, we found that conducting team audits occasionally provides a valuable opportunity for team members to learn from each other and expand the scope of the review beyond what could be accomplished individually or in pairs.
Octoverse: The state of open source and rise of AI in 2023
What does it mean for a new technology to go mainstream? First released in 2005, Git was still a new open source version control system when we founded GitHub. Today, Git is a foundational element of the modern developer experience—93% of developers use it to build and deploy software everywhere1. In 2023, GitHub data highlighted how another technology has quickly begun to reshape the developer experience: AI.

The architecture of today's LLM applications
We want to empower you to experiment with LLM models, build your own applications, and discover untapped problem spaces. That’s why we sat down with GitHub’s Alireza Goudarzi, a senior machine learning researcher, and Albert Ziegler, a principal machine learning engineer, to discuss the emerging architecture of today’s LLMs. In this post, we’ll cover five major steps to building your own LLM app, the emerging architecture of today’s LLM apps, and problem areas that you can start exploring today.
Demystifying LLMs: How they can do things they weren't trained to do
Large language models (LLMs) are revolutionizing the way we interact with software by combining deep learning techniques with powerful computational resources. While this technology is exciting, many are also concerned about how LLMs can generate false, outdated, or problematic information, and how they sometimes even hallucinate (generating information that doesn’t exist) so convincingly. Thankfully, we can immediately put one rumor to rest.
Developers are the first group to adopt AI at work. Here’s why that matters.
As early adopters of new technologies and practices, developers are often bellwethers of business landscape change. That’s why, at GitHub, we believe that the more businesses can understand what developers need to thrive, the better they can support the rest of their organizations. That’s never been more apparent than with their adoption of AI. While the world is still grappling with its use cases, we’ve found that developers are already using it at scale.

Shaping the GitHub of the future as COO
I joined GitHub on April 23, 2013 – almost exactly 10 years ago. In the time since then, I’ve seen the astonishing evolution of GitHub, and I am thrilled to be stepping into the role of Chief Operating Officer for the company I have loved for more than a decade. When I joined GitHub, we were small and scrappy, driven by the pure joy of creating things that made software development easier and more fun.

Webhooks are by far our most widely adopted integration, but they’ve always been buried in a big list of external services. Today, we’re making some major improvements in the way you configure, customize, and debug your webhooks. First, webhooks are a lot more prominent in your repository settings page. You can now configure webhooks directly in your repository settings, instead of having to use the API. You can also choose specific events and a payload format (JSON!).
