OPINION: Even in the midst of a global pandemic, homophobia is alive and well

OPINION: Even in the midst of a global pandemic, homophobia is alive and well

bearworldmag.com — In the midst of a global pandemic, two organizations — one, a federally run agency for health and human services, and the other, an evangelical Christian hate group disguised as an humanitarian aid organization — have come under fire for some very problematic and offensive practices and beliefs directed toward the LGBTQ+ community.

White Bears, it’s time for you to be uncomfortable.

White Bears, it’s time for you to be uncomfortable.

bearworldmag.com — Imagine walking into an LGBTQ space and not seeing anyone who looks like you. This should not be unimaginable, since the whole point of the Bear community is to give space to men of size who feel excluded by the broader gay community because they don’t look like pin-up models. However, for some reason, White Bears seem to not be able to grasp this concept when it concerns Bears of Color who feel excluded from Bear spaces. During a time when the Black Lives Matter movement has rightfully taken up space on our news feeds, a conversation has opened up again in Bear spaces about the lack of diversity and inclusion, and the silence of White gays when it comes to the lives of Black people and People of Color. But, it’s a conversation that many White Bears still seem to not want to have.

OPINION: Yes, queer people are p*ssed that ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ is axed.

OPINION: Yes, queer people are p*ssed that ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ is axed.

bearworldmag.com — Ok, so we all woke up this morning to some disappointing news: Netflix has not renewed The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring Kiernan Shipka in the titular role. It seems like the whole world took a minute to all have a collective moan, but no moan is equal to that of the queer community, it seems.

OPINION: 25 Years of Bear Stripes: Why Inclusion Matters in the Bear Community

OPINION: 25 Years of Bear Stripes: Why Inclusion Matters in the Bear Community

bearworldmag.com — The Bear Flag, or more properly, The International Bear Brotherhood Flag, was created in 1995. The seven horizontal colors — Dark brown, orange/rust, golden yellow, tan, white, gray, and black — were originally designed to represent actual bear fur colors around the world, though these colors have sometimes been interpreted as a representation of the skin and hair colors of the men in the Bear community. Regardless of what the colors were specifically intended to represent, the fact of the matter is that the multiple colors were always meant as a symbol of diversity and inclusion; Bears come in all different shades and colors. Somehow, even with black, brown, yellow, tan and gray stripes added to our pride flags, we sometimes still support the writing of “No Blacks, no Asians, no fats, no fems” on dating app profiles, because… These are just preferences, right?

Rapper DDm discusses his new EP, recounting the Black queer male experience

Rapper DDm discusses his new EP, recounting the Black queer male experience

bearworldmag.com — DDm is not your ordinary rapper. Born and raised in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, he first made a name for himself as a local battle rapper. After gaining a large following, DDm (short for Dapper Dan Midas) and experiencing some of the harsh realities of homophobia and queer stigma in the Hip-Hop community, DDm took to the booth, helping to create a space for queer artists in Hip-Hop. Always a flamboyant performer and an imaginative and creative lyricist, DDm definitely puts his own spin on rap, while still maintaining some of the fundamental principles of the genre. He is definitely a force, and one that’s been building for a long time. I had a chance to sit down with my friend DDm and discuss his new EP, the importance of telling his story and what we can expect from him next.

‘Rainbow Revolutions’ takes us on a colorful and informative ride through LGBTQ+ history

‘Rainbow Revolutions’ takes us on a colorful and informative ride through LGBTQ+ history

bearworldmag.com — Though the book is clearly illustrated and written for younger readers, I don’t believe it is merely just a children’s book. As a queer adult in my 30s, there were many things about my own history that I never knew before picking up a copy of Rainbow Revolutions. This book is definitely meant for anyone looking to learn a bit more about LGBTQ+ history and culture.

‘Innocent Boy’ is a frightening queer allegory of capitalist greed and corruption

‘Innocent Boy’ is a frightening queer allegory of capitalist greed and corruption

bearworldmag.com — We’ve all been there ‒ Stuck between “a rock and a hard place”, as they say. However, for a young, Black trans boy named Penny (Unique Jenkins), this almost seems like an understatement. In Brock Cravy’s frightening, queer, neon-western horror short Innocent Boy, a peculiar cast of fantastically sketchy characters occupy a dark, abandoned, trashy, drug-ridden farm house located just off of a long, dusty road in rural Texas. The house, frequently visited by travelers looking for a good time, features a group of queer hustlers led by a loathsome Madam, who they all call Momma (Michael Vincent Berry). These hustlers prey on the desolate souls who visit them in a desperate attempt to treat their own mental and emotional anguish.

Kyle Meets… Broadway director Robert O’Hara, talks ‘Slave Play’ and not comforting audiences

queerforty.com — Playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ "Slave Play ", a three act play that explores themes of sex, race and power dynamics in interracial relationships, was staged Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop before being transferred to Broadway at the Golden Theatre on October 6, 2019. Because of its heavy subject matter, the show has polarized audiences. Many people seem to have fallen absolutely in love with it, while others have taken to social media and various other media outlets to express their disdain. I have long followed the work of director and playwright Robert O’Hara, the director of "Slave Play". In all the years that Robert and I have been in touch, I never really had a chance to sit down and chat with him one on one. Recently, we had a chance to sit down and discuss more of his work, the success of Slave Play, and some of the controversy surrounding it.

The Problem with Abusive Relationships Masquerading as Kink

The Problem with Abusive Relationships Masquerading as Kink

bearworldmag.com — A healthy D/s relationship makes both parties feel good. Likewise, a sub who is being respected and getting what he/she/they need out of the relationship can begin to experience an increase in their self-esteem and self-worth. If a sub is being torn apart emotionally, mentally and/or physically by a controlling partner, then this is not a healthy D/s relationship. It is abuse.
