Six risky projects will share nearly $1M from Star-Friedman Foundation
How will the development of new materials make possible the next generation of clean energy? What’s at stake in making artificial intelligence more efficient and cost-effective? Where can we locate the earliest evidence of life in the geological record? The winners of this year’s Star-Friedman Challenge for Promising Scientific Research are pursuing the answers to these and other questions.
Questions to Guide an Investigation of the Capitol Attack
The invasion of the United States Capitol was an entirely predictable event, which makes the wholesale security collapse all the more unconscionable. Threats on social media grew more frequent and specific after President Donald Trump called on his supporters to gather in Washington, D.C., and push Congress to overturn the election results. Somehow though, several security leaders said they could not have imagined the violence that happened on January 6.
Risk of Election-Related Violence Remains, Here’s What Could Reduce It
Six weeks after the election, the United States still faces an elevated risk of political violence despite the Electoral College certifying the result and the courts upholding it against dozens of false claims of fraud. Before the election, I developed an analytic framework to monitor the threat of post-election violence, and the situation has worsened across nearly every indicator since my initial assessment.
Initial Risk Assessment for U.S. Post-Election Violence
Roughly 12 hours after most polls closed, there is an elevated risk of post-election violence and instability in the United States, according to the indicators I proposed on Tuesday. The president’s false statements about the results are the primary driver for the increased threat. While many consequential developments are still to come, the majority of the indicators remain neutral and reflect residual resilience that could act as a counterbalance to the president’s inflammatory pronouncements.
An Analytic Framework for Assessing Risks of U.S. Post-Election Violence
Today and the days ahead are the most consequential period for the United States in at least a generation. Many around the world are watching with us to see who we are and what our choice could mean for their own struggles for responsive and inclusive democracy. Many of us watching should be looking not only to see who wins, but to monitor the risk of post-election violence and take action to prevent it.
We the People: Lessons from Africa for Defeating Authoritarianism in 2020 U.S. Election
U.S. democracy is facing its greatest challenge in a generation, simultaneously confronting an authoritarian leader, a global pandemic, and the consequences of centuries of systemic racism and inequality. Americans tend to think of our country as democracy’s exemplar, and the United States has a long history of pointing out governance problems abroad, suggesting steps to solve them, and often devoting resources to various forms of intervention.
Security Fragmentation Hinders Humanitarian Response in the Sahel
November 17, 2020 The humanitarian emergency in the Sahel is causing unprecedented suffering. Approximately 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—the hardest hit countries in the region. The number of people facing acute hunger has tripled over the past year to reach 7.4 million, and the number of children requiring aid has jumped by two-thirds.
Mali: Does Mali's Coup Advance Democracy?
Washington, DC — In an all too familiar scene, on Aug. 18, Malian soldiers arrested the president and other senior officials, took over state television, and put themselves in charge. This is the second coup in Mali since 2012, when the country spiraled into a multi-layered crisis that persists to this day.
Does Mali’s Coup Advance Democracy?
In an all too familiar scene, on Aug. 18, Malian soldiers arrested the president and other senior officials, took over state television, and put themselves in charge. This is the second coup in Mali since 2012, when the country spiraled into a multi-layered crisis that persists to this day. The leaders of the coup are calling it a popular revolution, and Mali’s main opposition movement, known as M5-RFP, has celebrated the forced resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
